THE BROWNS BOARD

The offense

Our offense has scored 47 points in 2 games... that's 23.5 per game. It's gotta be a record for us.

Here are the keys:

1 - THE OFFENSIVE LINE - All 5 of these guys are playing awesome. Sure, there have been a few missed steps, but very few. Not many holding penalties, not many false starts (if any, I can't remember), and they are getting excellent push in the run game. These guys have set the tone, and will continue to. It is safe to say that it is up to the "skill position" guys to execute because they are getting all the time and run lanes they need to perform. Add in Josh Gordon, and this offense would be electric. For now, it is just good enough to continue to get W's and it is because our line can dominate.

2 - THE SYSTEM - I've only watched 2 games so far, but other than the first half of the Steelers game Shanahan's play-calling has been damn-near-perfect. I haven't seen such capable play calls since the Browns came back in '99. I think we found our OC that is going to stick around for a while. This guy is talented. His zone-blocking scheme has really helped Mack and Thomas flourish in the run-game, a part of their game that was somewhat suspect in the past. Now we have 5 guys capable of run-blocking and providing enough pass protection, thanks to this scheme.

3 - HOYER - THE GAME MANAGER - 2 games, no turnovers... (knock on wood). 2 to 0 TD to INT ratio so far... I'll take it. Hoyer has played great within himself. He has not tried to take on too much (sans 1 bad throw this week) and he just keeps moving the chains. He's not Brady, Manning, etc., but he is as good as R.Wilson, and we can get pretty far with that type of play.

4 - "SKILL" PLAYERS STEPPING UP - 1. Andrew Hawkins - he's not a deep threat, but he's a threat to get open on every play. 2. Terrence West - looks like a 3-down back. 3. Miles Austin - TD catch and 3rd down catch in the 4th qtr make up for the easy drop earlier in the game. 4. JIm Dray and Gary Barnidge - they're not Cameron, but they played a big role in this past weeks game. 5. Isaiah Crowell - I love watching this guy run.

This offense is not "proliferic" by any means, but they are good enough to keep pace with other teams especially with some of the timely play they are getting from their defense...

I hope they can keep it up.

Go Browns!!!!

The crazy part is we've looked that way without arguably the best skill player available to us in Cameron (hurt in 2nd half of Pitt game, out last week) and obviously no Gordon. Heck Tate is going to be the odd man out most likely cause of his injury and he looked pretty dang good before.

Nice post. Note the Browns have the most touchdowns in the AFC(6). But our D has given the most too. Interesting because this is the opposite of what I expected.

I think the D will start clamping down soon. They have to get the system in sync. Once they do, they'll tighten up.

Good stuff...

On Line and System... I see it as a Chicken and egg thing... When we ran zones schemes last year they tended to fall apart at the OGs. This year's duo looks to be much better suited to it. As you say Joe and Alex thrive in it.

Play calling... I agree. Young Shanny seems to have gotten better once out of Daddy's shadow. The run has been setting up the PA pass beautifully. The attack's balance has been good. A tad less love of the PA Naked boot would seem prudent going forward, but that's as picky as I can get. Not sure who calls for the hurry up, but kudos to them as well.

I don't recall any Week One O-line penalties and do not see any on us in my notes. I will be alert this week. I know Thomas got an early holding call this week.

Good post and encouraging. I will say I am a Hoyer fan but there were definitely more than one bad pass thrown yesterday. But hey, at the end when it counts he led a hell of a drive.

I meant forcing throws. I'll agree his accuracy has been off on quite a few passes. The one I was talking about was the one deep ball he threw up near the end zone coming off a bootleg that he threw it into double coverage and it was basically a jump ball that we were lucky not to be a pick.

The one in our 2nd series that Dray had a shot at? I initially thought as you did, but rewatched the play and looked like Dray was the only one with a shot at it. The throw was ugly as hell, but not as dangerous as I initially thought. Appeared Dray shied away from the ball at the end due to the CB running up the sideline, but may have been the camera angle.

Anyhow, BH threw the above rolling right and away from pressure and the line of scrimmage. Seemed to me that BH threw uglies whenever he threw off of his back foot or fading away from the line. Not exactly a QB revelation, but if you watch the game again, let me know if you see same, please.
