Answers

1. Jameis Winston of Florida St. is the current Heisman trophy holder, and a candidate again. Name those other FSU players who have won the Heisman Trophy.

Charlie Ward 1993 and Chris Weinke 2000 (they both turned out to be shite as NFL QBs....what do you think Winston's fate will be? Up in smoke?)

2. Notre Dame QB Everett Golson is a Heisman Candidate. ND's is tied with USC and OSU for the most Heismans awarded. ND's last winner was WR/KR Tim Brown. Who was the last Notre Dame QB to win the Heisman?

John Huarte 1964

3. A. Marcus Mariota of Oregon is a Heisman Candidate. The University of Oregon has never had a Heisman winner, but their in state rival Oregon St. has had one. Name him.

Terry Baker 1962

B. Clemson RB Todd Gurley is a leading Heisman candidate. Clemson has never had a Heisman winner, but in state rival South Carolina has. Who was South Carolina's Heisman winner?

George Rogers, 1980

4. Name the only 3 players to hit the Triple Crown: Won the Heisman trophy, became the #1 overall pick of the NFL draft, and made the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Paul Hornung

OJ Simpson

Earl Campbell

Other candidates that could join this group, if they could somehow acquire HOF status are: Jim Plunkett, Billy Sims, Bo Jackson, Vinny Testaverde, Carson Palmer, Cam Newton, George Rogers.

Do any of these merit inclusion?

5. Name the only 3 current non FBS football programs to have had a Heisman trophy winner.

Yale (2 Heisman winners), now FCS Princeton...Dick Kazmeier now FCS, Univ. of Chicago ...Jay Berwanger (they play in D-III)

6. What significance does George Taliaferro hold?

He is the first African-American ever taken in the NFL draft. The draft began in 1936 but Taliaferro was not taken until 1949...in the 13th round. So, essentially 13 full drafts were conducted without a single black player chosen. Compare the fact that the AAFC began taking black players as soon as it started operations in 1945.

7. Which NFL teams have won their one and only Super Bowl appearance?

Saints, Bucs, Jets

8. What was the official creation date of the New Orleans Saints?

November 1, 1966. All Saints Day....naturally. They began play in the 1967 season.

9. Who are the only 2 players who primarily played for the Saints in their careers to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

Rickey Jackson and Willie Roaf. (A couple of HOF players had a "cup of coffee" with the Saints, including Ditka, Jim Taylor, Doug Atkins)

10. What father-son duo coached the New Orleans Saints?

Bum and Wade Phillips

11. The Saints are considered to be one of only 4 major league teams (teams in the NFL/NBA/NHL/MLB) whose names have a "religious connotation". Name the other three teams.

San Diego Padres

LA Angels

New Jersey Devils

12. As you may know, the Saints were an awful team for like their first 20 years of existance. That is perhaps because at the outset they were making bad decisions. The Saints traded away the #1 overall pick in the 1967 draft that they held. Who did they trade that pick to, and who did that team draft?

Traded to Baltimore Colts who picked Bubba Smith HOF. Saints first pick was a DE named Leslie Kelly...who did nothing)

Good question... I would make a case for Bo. Career was tragically cut short after 4 years and he was only part time for those, but what a player.

There is HOF precedent for greatness trumping a shortened career... Gale Sayers. Gale only really played five years. His 6th and 7th were token appearances. And he missed a third of one of his five.

Bo's YPG and YPA averages are both greater than Gale's.

Fair point.....and on the other hand you have the guy with the great longevity. Vinny's total career numbers are better than all but a handful of other players. Yet he was never considered one of the best in the game.
