PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) Cleveland Browns receiver Terrelle Pryor has been held out of practice after aggravating a hamstring injury, and starting cornerback Justin Gilbert hurt his right hip flexor.

Coach Mike Pettine provided the update after the Browns completed a joint practice with the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday.

Pettine says Pryor aggravated the injury in practice a day earlier. Pryor had just returned to practice on Saturday after missing more than a week.

Gilbert was hurt 40 minutes into practice when he tumbled to the turf while defending Bills receiver Tobias Palmer during a one-on-one drill. The 2014 first-round draft pick was slow to get up, and then limped to the sideline where trainers wrapped the upper portion of Gilbert's right leg.

Pettine didn't know if Gilbert could play Thursday, when Cleveland hosts Buffalo in a preseason game.

Pettine expects Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden to sit out one more game to rest his hamstring injury.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Pryor (hamstring) has an excellent chance to make the final 53-man roster.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Pryor (hamstring) has an excellent chance to make the final 53-man roster.

Analysis:

Pryor has been dealing with a hamstring injury that cost him nearly two weeks of action, but was able to return and participate in joint practices with the Bills over the weekend. Although the converted quarterback may have looked a bit rusty, both his determination and physical tools have been praised by the coaching staff so far during camp. His versatility may also help his case, as Pryor can potentially be used for trick plays or line up at tight end. In a position group that lacks a standout talent, the former Buckeye quarterback's upside alone could help him crack the final roster in a competitive battle.

Whitner recieves cold reception in buffalo

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) On a hot muggy morning, Browns safety Donte Whitner received a cold reception in his return to the Buffalo Bills' training camp facility for the first time in five years.

''BOOOOOOOO!'' several Bills fans yelled as Whitner took the field Monday, when Cleveland and Buffalo opened a two-day series of joint practices.

''I don't see Whitner on the Bills' Wall of Fame, do you?'' one fan yelled in Whitner's direction.

The catcalls and boos did not come as a surprise.

Selected eighth overall in the 2006 draft, Whitner played his first five seasons in Buffalo before wearing out his welcome once his contract expired following the 2010 season.

Though Whitner has disputed this, former Bills general manager Buddy Nix said the player didn't want to re-sign with the team because Whitner didn't want to be in Buffalo. Whitner didn't help by engaging in numerous spats with Bills fans on his Twitter account before signing with San Francisco in free agency.

''Ah, I don't even think about that. That was just something that goes on on Twitter,'' Whitner said. ''I'm past that.''

Bills players and fans have had difficulty letting go.

Last summer, Whitner caused a stir when the Bills' future was uncertain following the death of Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson. Whitner referred to the team as ''the Toronto Bills,'' predicting they would relocate to Canada. The Bills were instead sold to Terry and Kim Pegula, who are committed to keeping the team in western New York.

Whitner also took issue with Bills receiver Sammy Watkins. Whitner warned the then-rookie to ''be quiet'' after Watkins said he was looking forward to playing the Browns last season.

On Monday, Watkins was amused by the boos toward Whitner.

''Yeah, that's what you're going to hear when you kind of bad-talk Buffalo,'' Watkins told The Associated Press. ''It's funny.''

Whitner, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, is entering his 10th season, and second with his hometown Browns.

In Buffalo, Whitner experienced difficulty adjusting to former Bills coach Dick Jauron's 4-3 defensive system. In 2008, the Bills went 7-9, falling short of Whitner's guarantee that they would make the playoffs.

''I think of it as a learning experience. I made a lot of mistakes, did a lot of good,'' Whitner said, reflecting on his time with Buffalo. ''But that comes with maturity and growth. And I'm glad to be where I am now.''

With Kelvin Benjamin now out in Carolina the news here is both T. Benjamin due to contract year or T. Pryor may be a option if cut. I said wow when I heard it too.

I give Pryor about a 10% chance of making this roster at this point. I'm not sure I'd want us to waste a roster spot on that big of a risk

I'd take it in a NY minute. Too much size, speed and athleticism to let anyone else grab him away.

With Shaw out for extended time, I think Pryor could be an option to keep on as WR/ 3rd string QB

Someone help me out- can't they put Shaw on the IR\designated to return list?

Interesting.....though we have Thaddy Lew at 3rd string.

Yup Thad is now 3rd string. But if they like what they see in potential- Farmer & Pettine may well decide to keep Pryor around. He's got one thing Hawkins and Benjamin don't have- and that's size.

They can....BUT, he would count as a roster spot against the 53 man ....and then have to be activated when healed(or waived)....

Assuming the Browns would have tried to get him to the PS anyway(which means they gotta waive him first), this is probably the surest way to keep him for another year.....

You must not have been around for the Carlton Mitchell discussions...

I don't think they compare. I really like how Pryor was transitioning to a new position before the injury. Got to be room on the 53. He plays/thinks like a Brown. I see Mike Evans there with just a tad more speed. And he may be one of the few receivers we have who understands play extension and the need to come back to the QB.

I can't believe he's still not practicing. I'm hoping there is enough time and that the Shaw injury and JM's elbow situation forces the Browns to keep him on the roster.
