Aboard the papal plane, Aug 18, 2014 / 12:07 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis supports international intervention in Iraq and is willing to go to there personally if it will help end the violence against Christians and other religious minorities.

In these cases where there is an unjust aggression, I can only say that it is licit to stop the unjust aggressor, Pope Francis told reporters.

I underscore the verb 'stop.' I don't say 'to bomb' or 'make war,' (but) 'stop it,' he said in response to the question posed by CNA and EWTN News Rome bureau chief Alan Holdren.

Speaking to journalists aboard the Aug. 18 plane flight back to Italy from South Korea, the Pope noted the Holy See's diplomatic efforts to end the violence in Iraq, especially against Iraqi minorities.

Pope Francis also said that a papal visit to Iraq was one of the possibilities.

And in this moment, I am ready. He added: and right now it isn't the most, the best thing to do but I am disposed to this.

Military victories by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS or ISIL) have resulted in persecution and murder of Iraqi Christians and other religious minorities. Tens of thousands have fled their homes.

Many have taken refuge in the northern region known as Kurdistan.

A papal communique against the violence has been sent to all the nunciatures and a letter written to the United Nations Secretary General. The Pope has met with the governor of Iraqi Kurdistan and has named Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, as his personal envoy to Iraq.

Pope Francis stressed that the means to stop violence in Iraq must be evaluated and that the violence cannot be used as a pretext for other goals.

To stop the unjust aggressor is licit. But we also have to have memory, as well, eh. How many times under this excuse of stopping the unjust aggressor the powers have taken control of nations. And, they have made a true war of conquest, he said. One single nation cannot judge how you stop this, how you stop an unjust aggressor.

The Pope noted the establishment of the United Nations after World War II and the need to discuss unjust aggression there.

I am only in agreement in the fact that when there is an unjust aggressor that he is stopped, he said. Stopping the unjust aggressor is a right that humanity has but it is also a right of the aggressor to be stopped so he doesn't do evil.

The Pope stressed the plight of Christians and other religious minorities in Iraq.

They speak to me of the Christians, poor Christians, and the martyrs and yes, there are so many martyrs but here there are men and women, religious minorities, and not all Christian and all are equal before God, no?

The Pope also condemned cruelty in warfare, especially towards children and other non-combatants.

Today, children dont count. Once they spoke of conventional warfare. Today this doesn't count, he lamented. Im not saying that the conventional war is a good thing, but today the bomb goes and kills the innocent with the culpable with the child and the women and mother. They kill everyone. But, we need to stop and think a bit about what level of cruelty we have reached. This should scare us.

This comment is not to create fear, but rather a cause for more study, the Pope said.

The level of cruelty today of humanity is a bit scary, he added. He also vocally rejected torture.

Today, torture is one of the almost ordinary means of acts of intelligence services, of judicial processes. And, torture is a sin against humanity. It is a crime against humanity. And, to Catholics I say that torturing a person is a mortal sin. It is a grave sin. But, its more. It's a sin against humanity.

The Popes remarks also touched on the prayer for peace at the Vatican, where he hosted the presidents of Israel and the Palestinian state as well as the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople.

These two men are men of peace. They are men who believe in God. They have lived so many nasty things, so many nasty things. They are convinced that the only path to resolve that situation is negotiation, dialogue, peace.

Was it a failure? No, I think that the door is open.

Now the smoke of the bombs of the wars don't allow us to see the door but the door is still open from that moment, Pope Francis said. As I believe in God, I believe that God is watching that door and all who pray and ask that he help us.

Nine other popes have advocated stopping the aggression of Islam. We call those the crusades.

from a secular standpoint those murderous Islamists do not understand diplomacy, let alone decency and faith of other people groups.

Pope Francis has gotta recruit some badasss knights for the Lord in order to send a proper message.

one that those cowards will understand and send them to Allah faster.

a crusade to remember

Isis beheaded an American journalist today. I hate that we're not doing anything about this.

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/08/20/world/middleeast/isis-james-foley-syria-execution.html?_r=0&referrer=

Aside from sending in a SEAL team to extract the other guy (if his location is even known) or sending MI6/CIA through London to find out who the executioner was (which they will do) - what exactly would you like the us to do? ISIS is in a bind right now because the entire Middle East hates them. The video is infuriating, but pissing off the American populace is exactly why they released it. They're trying to change the narrative from ISIS committing genocide to ISIS vs USA.

... sending MI6/CIA through London to find out who the executioner was (which they will do) ...

Already happening, apparently. I suspect it'll be announced at the same time as Gordon's suspension. That is, hopefully soon, but fuck knows when actually.

We could destroy them with ease. We never should have cut and run on the region. Yet another humongous mistake on the part of our esteemed president. It's easy to say but but but BUSH! And there's some truth to that but it doesn't matter now who started it. It's been started and now it must be finished.

I love the "it wasnt my idea" mantra of the POTUS here

and the blame Bush segue is so naturally "optimal" for the narcissist....

but it was shortsighted of Obama to leave Iraq - dismiss ISIL as a "JV team" and go on fundraising.

And he would probably know this if he spent more time in the Oval office reading the daily intel (which he mustve missed?)

and take the direction that NO DOUBT the military advised - and keep some forces there. IMO

Interestingly, the guy who does the beheading has an 'eastern London' accent, whatever that is:

Don't watch if you are offended by this type of thing, but I think we should see the type of scum we are dealing with. Cowards.

blocked. A huge attempt is being made to go all out to block the video.

Can't say that I blame them - but isis, hama, palestinians, russia, north korea,

china, to mention the primary ones.....

are thumbing their noses at obamao's cowardice, and complete ineptness as a president.

These cowardly, extremely violent vermin need to be dealth with.

Ignoring them in Syria was the major mistake, as well as leaving Iraq too early.

Obamao bailed, the s. Iraqi army bailed, and isis stepped into the void, capturing

all that American equipment, which we should have been giving to the Kurds up north.

And now, we have an open border to these same terrorists to the south of our country, thanks directly

to Obamao and holder and co.

It's a very bad time for westerners, especially Americans and israelis, to be traveling overseas

much.... big, serious trouble coming here, looks like it to me.

I hate that we're not doing anything about this but this Jim Foley. I'm disappointed in him. He knew he was going to die so what did he do? Appease. Say he wishes he wasn't American. I'd have spit in that fuckers face and called out to be avenged.

He's not a trained soldier, he's been captive for two years, he watched his colleague get his fuckin head sawn off, and you expect him to still have the constitution to be defiant? God damn, if you're that fired up, go to liveleak and watch some AH-64 guncam footage.

It's a matter of honor and common sense. Doing the soundbite they want

just gets you murdered more quickly. But getting murdered anyways, forget

turning your back on your family and your country etc.

these murderous lunatics mean business. And we have a president that

can't make up his mind. Just votes "present".

My first thought exactly. Whether he served or not, he was a reporter. He knew damn well that executions on video are only used to serve the executioners cause. He knew reading their cues wasn't going to save his life. Either he truly meant what he said or he was a complete dumbass.

Maybe I'm not as tough as you guys but I would give the reporter a break.

Knowing you are about to be murdered in a most gruesome fashion either quickly or slowly I'm not sure that the first thought in my mind would be defiance.

I would be surprised if any of you macho Patriots reaction would be "fuck you raghead god bless president Obama!"

It's easy to sit behind a keyboard with a cup of hot coffee or a cold beer and say, he should have done this.... Bottom line is everyone is breakable in a situation like that. No matter what the training. I've been through SERE training. But I have no idea how I would react to 2 years of being held hostage, not being told anything except what they want you to hear. Who knows how many times they acted like they were going to kill him before? He might have thought there was a possibility he would not be killed. So I don't hold what he said against him. He was half out of his mind with fear and stress from being held for over 2 years.
