THE BROWNS BOARD

These things snowball. Especially for the highly touted guys. Continually ragging on them ensures they're going to bust. That's my opinion. If fans just take a wait and see approach then you are more likely to see him succeed.

Yep. It's the fans fault. Don't be too critical. wouldn't want a pro NFL players self esteem to suffer. No need to worry about AJ Green, Brown or Steve Smith, but those fans !

Ahhh, the poor little fella. Maybe we should all send him Valentines Day candies wrapped in a "You're doing great" ribbon.

BTW, that +1 rep on your post is from me when I accidentally hit it instead of 'quote' - you're welcome B)

Nobody wants any prima donnas on their team until they turn around and see the complete dearth of talent. It's a balancing act. But at this point people just get off to saying "I told you he sucks!" to the point where he can do no right. He could put 4 straight amazing practices together in a row and they'd all be overshadowed by one screw up.

This post will be valid when he puts 4 straight amazing practices together.

I like the thought of that and, if it is indeed the case, it would put Rex Ryan near the top of my list when it comes to great coaches and individuals.

I don't see that Rex has to necessarily any credit if what I hypothesized is anywhere near the truth. O'Neal just has to keep strength on the field opposite Gilbert and put Gilbert on "an island" with his play calls. Even Cassell and Tyrod should be able to find him...

Plus I am loathe to give Rexy credit for anything... ever... so there's that.

Unrelentingly tell those guys they suck for a year straight and see if they perform the way they do.

Hip Flexor.

We sure are going to be short-handed Thursday night.

Justin Gilbert injured early in final Browns-Bills practice

Second-year Browns cornerback Justin Gilbert had quite a day Monday when the Browns and Bills held a joint practice in Rochester.

Tuesday, he had a much shorter day. Gilbert left early in the teams’ final joint practice session after going down and needing an assist from team trainers to get up and head to the sideline.

Trainers placed ice and a protective wrap on Gilbert’s right quad, and he watched the rest of practice from the sideline. After practice Browns coach Mike Pettine told reporters Gilbert suffered a hip flexor.

The Browns were hoping Gilbert, the No. 8 pick in the 2014 draft, would bounce back from a lost rookie season, but he’s struggled in camp and in last week’s preseason opener. The Browns spent $7 million for this season to bring in veteran cornerbackTramon Williams in case Gilbert didn’t catch on quickly, and though it’s early, that looks like a sound decision.

If his injury lingers, the Browns will likely be really short on cornerbacks Thursday when the Browns and Bills play a preseason game in Cleveland. Joe Haden andPierre Desir, a 2014 fourth-rounder, sat out both practices with the Bills, and second-year nickelback K’Waun Williams also sat out Tuesday.

I would, just like everyone else here.

Because you'd tell us.

How would I know? I'm counting on the same idiot reporters that want their initial "waste of a first round pick!!!" analysis vindicated so they underreport any good days he has.

Yes, we all know the world is out to get Gilbert. You are letting your "lil Johnny is so mistreated" complex bleed out on to Gilbert.

I'm with War on this. Fan negativity can be devastating to a player. I have not been a Fan of Gilbert, but bashing the young man is not helping him OR the Browns. As I've said before, I will support any & alll Browns' players & I'm hoping he succeeds here.

We'll see, but I refuse to sabotage any chance the young man may have. He is a Brown.

If he can't hack hearing bad things about him from people on twitter or some boob like Mary Kay then maybe professional sports aren't for him. Everyone wants him to do well but they aren't going to sugar coat when he is playing awful.

I would say there's no problem pointing out mistakes or when a player screws up...its what we do....

But the real issue(for me) is the mob mentality to attack a guy "only" because he was a high pick....and how people just pile on when the guy makes a mistake or has a bad game......

Contrary to what people are saying here, the guy has had a decent camp and has worked harder than he did last year(ala Johnny).....and has a ton of interceptions(in camp) and some of the most spectacular plays yet(so, YES, he has looked good and even VERY good some days)....also had one of the best defensive plays in the scrimmage too(but well talk about his one screw up instead).....but when he "almost" gives up a big play in a practice game then has a bad day at practice, everyone piles on and it becomes of whole week of attacking the kid......sheesh....(for almost giving up a pass and having a bad practice)

Mayle spent 3 weeks dropping everything in sight, yet we support him.....Pryor sucked against the Bills and then went down again.....Cam Erving graded lower than Gilbert in the Wash game(along with about 5-6 others)........ yet you'd think it was only Gilbert who's had some bad days....

Bottom line....coach is sticking with him, because unlike some other busts, this guy HAS shown his capabilities and HAS flashed and made amazing plays. And for every screw up he's made, I can show you 3 quality plays.....and, yes, Ive watched every single play(several times)......and hes worth the effort if we can tap that talent and get him turned into a pro.....some are more work than others.....but standing in the peanut gallery slinging arrows isnt gonna do anything positive for Him, the team or anybody else....and anyone who's trying to learn a job and gets slammed nation wide for making mistakes in a practice is probably gonna feel that, whether you think they should or not......

The problem is his attitude though. I don't think anyone expected him to be on the elite level day one, the CB position takes time. But when you look really bad and come and say you were "flawless" that really rubs people (me included) the wrong way. Manziel to his credit dropped that crap when he got humbled big time last year, but it's clear Gilbert hasn't.

Richard Sherman can talk smack because he's arguably the best at what he does in the world. Gilbert at this point is no where near that level but still acts that way. That's a major, major problem.

I think he may be one of these guys for whom the light bulb comes on for him just a little late. Maybe some time in the middle of the season things really start to happen for him. So, no, I would not give up on him. I would give him 3 years in fact.

If by the end of next year he is still in a fog....let him go. But not til then.

Maybe we ought to just give him a trophy for participating. C'mon pull up your big

boy pants and show us what you have. No more "flawless" comments. You are

a young guy with a lot of talent. There is till time but the window is getting a little

smalle. If anyone thinks the critics are harsh here just imagine if he was in a

big media market playing like he has been.

Have any of you been in a job where you felt you could do nothing right, no matter how well you did? That's JG right now.

The people talking shit about his poor play are not his coworkers or bosses. If they were hard on him, I could see why his confidence would be shot. However, what a bunch of fans and sports writers say about him should be of little concern to him. Play well and even the outside doubters will shut up. This all falls on Gilbert.

Just for the sake of perspective, I went back 5 years and researched the first few CB's taken in the top 10-15 picks......

2014:

Gilbert - (#8)......rookie PFF score of -2.6

Fuller - (#14).....rookie PFF score of -18.4...(worst of all rookie CB's)

2013 -

Milliner - (#9)... ..rookie PFF score of -2.4..(3rd camp and still not starting)

Hayden - (#12)...rookie PFF score of -6.5..(3rd camp and still not starting)

2012:

Claiborne - (#6)..rookie PFF score of -4.1..(4th camp and might start)(maybe)

Gilmore - (#10)...rookie PFF score of -4.0..(started last year and scored his first plus in 3 years)

2011:

Peterson - (#5)...rookie PFF score of -9.5(worst rookie score in his class)(improved over next 2 years to become one of the best)

2010:

Haden - (#7).....rookie PFF score of +14.6....WOW!....he is the last CB drafted(top 10) to play well in year one.....all the rest....everyone of them......score the same or worse than Gilbert....

So....based upon recent history....Mr. Terrible graded as well or better than all the other CB's with similar expectations....

And the other popular CB rookies from last year, that so many were saying we should have picked, faired even worse....

Fuller was rated dead last....had 2 good games early, then turned to shit....and Dennard was so great that he didnt even play for a team that needs CB's.....

So....lets be fair in our comparisons, as CB(like QB) is an extra difficult position and our style of man play is the most difficult.....Let's give him a chance...he'll get it.....

That's all well and good, except Mayle and Erving are rookies and Pryor is playing a brand new position with very little offseason training.
