Ties Have made a difference

I didn't want to jam up the Survey thread with this information. On there I have a question about the OT issue. Part of that dealt with "Have ties made a difference in the standings". Well...the answer is definitively YES......even lately they have made a difference.

Here is a litany of the years in which ties have affected the title race, either league/conference/division titles or Wildcard spots. It was far more of an issue early on...but as you can see from below...it has been an issue lately:

1920 Akron 8-0-3 Decatur 10-1-2 Akron declared Champion

1921 Chicago 9-1-1 Buffalo 9-1-2 Chicago declared Champ (they did play different numbers of games in those years

1924 Cleveland Bulldogs 7-1-1 Bears 6-1-4 Bulldogs declared Champs

1926 Franklin Yellow Jackets 14-1-2 Bears 12-1-3 YJs declared champs

1930 Packers 10-3-1 Giants 13-4 Packers declared champs

1932 Bears 7-1-6 Packers 10-3-1 Bears declared Champs

1935 Lions 7-3-2 Packers 8-4 Lions win Division

1937 Redskins 8-3 Giants 6-3-2 Redskins win Division

1944 Giants 8-1-1 Eagles 7-1-2 Giants win division

1949 Rams 8-2-2 Bears 9-3 Rams win division

1951 Ram 8-4 Lions and 49ers both 7-4-1 Rams win division

1955 Rams 8-3-1 Bears 8-4 Rams win Division

1956 Bears 9-2-1 Lions 9-3 Bears win division

1961 Giants 10-3-1 Eagles 10-4 Giants win division

1963 Bears 11-1-2 Packers 11-2-1 Bears win division

1964 Browns 10-3-1 Cardinals 9-3-2 Browns win division (and NFL title)

1968 Browns 10-4 Cardinals 9-4-1 Browns win division.

1971 Dolphins 10-3-1 Colts 10-4 Dolphins win division

1978 Vikings and Packers play to the only tie of the year...they also tie for the NFC Central title at 8-7-1

1986 49ers 10-5-1 Rams 10-6 49ers win division

1989 Browns 9-6-1 Browns win division Oilers and Steeler both finish 9-7...but both make playoffs as WC. But, the team the Browns tied with, the Chiefs, finished 8-7-1...and missed the playoffs due to the tie.

1997 Redskins who finish 8-7-1 loses out on WC to two teams that finished 9-7 (Lions/Vikings)

2008 Eagles at 9-6-1 beat out 9-7 Bears/Bucs/Cowboys for WC spot by virtue of the tie.

2012 11-4-1 49ers win division over 11-5 Seahawks (Seahawks still made WC spot)

2013 Packers at 8-7-1 win division over 8-8 Bears (who did not make playoffs)

2014 Panthers win NFC South with 7-8-1 record over Saints who finish 7-9 (no playoffs)

.........Also, Steelers win division with 11-5 record over 10-5-1 Bengals (who did make WC spot)

2016 Redskins had an 8-7-1 record.....lost a WC spot to 9-7 Lions

So, you see, ties have made a big difference in standings, in getting playoff spots etc. including having an effect on the playoffs....being making them or seeding, in 4 of the last 5 years. Surprising.

Maybe we can come up with an NFL shootout... and fuck the game up like the NHL did hockey.

Ties were a part of the NFL fabric for decades. No one liked them... except on the rare occasion when they were good enough to gain a playoff spot. But they were never meant to be "liked"... they just "were"...

That would seriously suck and just be a gimmick...like the College football OT rules. Which suck swamp water.

Disagree on the "swamp water" characterization, but the NCAA approach can be improved.

Rather than start an Offense on the opponent's 25-yl, virtually guaranteeing a reasonable FG attempt, start it at Offense's own 30 or so. Make them have to go further, but allow them to work in an expanded field to advance the ball into scoring range. Once their possession is over, then start the other Offense at the same spot, going the same direction.

I guarantee you there'd be fewer 5-OT games. I doubt most would require more than two...

Or....just have them play real football. Do like the pros....and if the game ends in a tie after a 10-15 minute OT...then let it be a tie. There were ties in college football for 150 years until this bastardized version came along. The game would not suffer because of it.

Ties are a part of my fabric home slice

Except that not how "the Pros" do it... score a TD first and win... kick a FG first and the other team gets a possession... once both have had a possession, it's "sudden death"...

Yes....but they do kick it off....and they do punt......things that are not done with the college OT rules. They play the game, they don't have gimmicks, they just have various rules as to how the game should end.

I don't see where ties affected anything. The interpretation of record is what caused the headaches.

So, the Browns have a tie in 1989 giving them a 9-6-1 record....where the Oilers and Steelers have a 9-7 record...and by virtue of that tie the Browns win their division....receive a home playoff game...which they win...allowing them to go on to the AFC title game....and that doesn't affect anything?

And in both 1964 and 1968 ties determine those division titles (Browns had wins where Cards had ties)...and both years Browns go to the playoffs....and Cardinals stay home. Including 1964...Browns last title.

And that doesn't affect anything? Whatever talents you may have Ghoolie....doing simple math does not appear to be one of them.
