THE BROWNS BOARD

Man in the middle

I finally got to watch the first preseason game and did the rewind slo mo thing through much of the first half. I haven't heard much buzz about Tretter so l tried to focus in on him when the O was on the field, and l gotta say l'm impressed. He's a solid dude.

Seems very athletic and good instincts. Like a lot of centers l saw him team up with a guard a fair amount to double team a defender, but also releases well on a delayed blitz to pick up a defender, and can get into the second level when he needs to. Didn't really see him bulldoze anyone mano a mano, but definitely held his own when he had to block solo. Saw him get an almost hold when he sensed a defender swing around him on Osweiler's long drive, which ain't great, but shows he knows what's going on and who was where because he was blocking some other guy when that guy brushed past him.

Good feet and good reactions. I think we're set at Center.

Last year MKC was talking to GB head coach Mike McCarthy. When asked about Tretter, McCarthy said that if he could stay healthy he would be a HOF caliber center.

I heard that was the knock on him. Seemed to play aggressive but not reckless. Here's hoping he can hang all year and beyond...

If you think about it, we could say the same thing about Bitonio.

IIRC, he only played an entire season just once.

Same impression here... athletic enough to get angles and compensate for lack of brute force. A lot of good Centers have made a living doing that.
