Swag Survey Thursday

The Gipper

Recommended Posts

So, since this is Swagger's Birthday, lets do this weeks survey this way Tell us who has the most swag in these categories. (note....maybe I am not so cool or so swag....but my understanding of swag is that it basically is "cool machismo".....let me know if you think a different definition applies): You can give several examples of these if you like.

1. Which Browns player ever had the most swag?

2. Which non Browns NFL player ever had the most swag?

3. Which actor had the most swag ever?

4. Which historical figure had the most swag ever?

5. Which female had the most swag ever.

Some of my own thoughts on the matter:

1. Which Browns player ever had the most swag?

Jim Brown. He really had it in aces. Warfield had it. Bernie too. Browns defenders: Dixon and Minnifield

2. Which non Browns NFL player ever had the most swag?

Brett Favre on offense....and Dick Butkus on defense.

3. Which actor had the most swag ever?

John Wayne of course. And Bogart. More recently, maybe Christian Bale.

4. Which historical figure had the most swag ever?

Abe Lincoln. Julius Caesar. Ieyasu Tokugawa.

5. Which female had the most swag ever.

Boudica, Sacajawea, Harriet Tubman (I went to her national historic site...she was a badass bitch...she was the real life Django Unchained) Amelia Earhart.

I'm going to go more "confidence" as my definition of swag...

1. Which Browns player ever had the most swag?

I am tempted to go with Sipe at his height leading the Kardiacs, but then I thought of Hanford Dixon. His "Dogs of the Defense" poster puts him over the top.

2. Which non Browns NFL player ever had the most swag?

My first thought was Deion and his high-stepping TD returns, but then Jim McMahon came to mind. Much briefer period of bravado, but that Roselle headband may be enough of an offset.

3. Which actor had the most swag ever?

First blush was "The Duke", but may be in large part to the signature gait. Bogart may surpass him based upon acting, but here I go with the slightly more contemporary Steve McQueen. Confidence plus "cool" was off the charts.

Aside: I saw a bio on McQueen once and how as an up and comer he could steal a scene not focused on him without having a line, but by ad libbing some movements that drew viewers to him. Check out the hearse scene in "The Magnificent Seven"... there's no better example. He reportedly drove Yul Brenner to distraction throughout that movie.

4. Which historical figure had the most swag ever?

Three excellent volumes by Edmund Morris, that I would recommend to everyone, leave me with one answer here... Theodore Roosevelt.

5. Which female had the most swag ever.

Many momentary figures in history come to mind (Parks, Tubman, Meir, Thatcher), but Susan B. Anthony's sustained crusades against against slavery and for women's suffrage gets her my nod.

No, Hoorta.....money has nothing to do with it. Swag was an old fashioned word for "loot".....

And FUCK Alice Walton. She claims to be the biggest philanthropist in that family. But, fuck her. Now, you know that she went to the same college my daughter goes to. And that college has likely been the beneficiary of her money....but, that college hoards it. They have like 1.2 Billion in endowment.....and they do NOT pretend at all to be interested in meeting the financial needs of their students. They are like Smaug....they sit on their gold and do NOT give it out where it is needed.

Beyond that....they charge $1100.00 a month for a dorm room.....or actually, they collect $4400.00 a month for a quad dorm room. 4 tiny rooms, a couple of sitting rooms and one bath. (this does not include board...that is more on top of that)

So...what do they do instead of giving grants to meet the financial needs of their students? The Walton Family makes student loans to these student. They sit on their money while the students there rack up loans of 60-70K ....and the Walton family is the one making the money from the loans.

If she was so great then she would say: use my fucking money to educate students.....not to sit on it like a miser....but they do the opposite....they join in the party to suck money out of their students.

Not only that, but she killed a guy apparently while driving drunk and got off scot free:

Alice Louise Walton (born October 7, 1949) is an American heiress to the fortune of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. She is the daughter of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton and Helen Walton, and sister of S. Robson Walton, Jim Walton and the late John T. Walton. With a net worth of $33.2 billion she is the wealthiest woman on earth, according to Business Insider. She has been arrested multiple times for driving while intoxicated, and in 1989, she was involved in the speeding death of a 50-year-old woman, Oleta Hardin, a cannery worker, but no charges were filed.[3][4]

On October 7, 2011, her 62nd birthday, she was again arrested for driving while intoxicated in Weatherford, Texas, after a dinner with friends in Fort Worth. Walton's attorney released a statement acknowledging the incident and expressing regret.[17][18] The charges were dropped by Texas prosecutors in September 2013 without formal charges being filed.[19][20] (somebody got bought off)

She has put huge sums of money into an art museum in NW Arkansas.........that seems a waste.

NO, Alice Walton is the opposite of Swag. She's a drunk killer. Anyone without her money would have done felony prison time.

Please tell me "Uhtred" is not a troll or wizard or from Harry Potter or "Middle Earth".

Z

No, he is a Saxon warrior, raised by the Danes....circa late 800s/early 900s. While he is fictional, he may be based on real characters who fought to defend what would become England from the invading Vikings.

Didn't know about the multiple DUIs Gip. And I don't know many students fresh out of college that could repay a $60k loan charging 5% in five years- without serious help from mom and dad. I do sympathize with current students that are saddled with huge debts coming out of school. You could buy a new Corvette, or have a serious down payment on a house with $60k. I call it keeping up with the Harvards and Yales of the world. What I paid for an entire semester at the University of Dayton back in the 70s would buy you a couple credit hours today. Allowing for inflation going back 40 years- UDs tuition for a year should be $7,700, not $37,000. It's no damn wonder they've been able to buy up all the private housing within a mile radius of the campus.

PS the $1.2 billion endowment is piddly compared to Harvard's $37 billion. Sitting on that much cash- everyone that gets admitted should be able to go there for free. I did drive through their campus once- and the place looks like it shits money.

Yes, compared to Harvard...and other Ivy League schools, 1.2B is not much. But compared to other smaller liberal arts schools, it is a huge amount. Particularly in ratio to their student population.

Where my son went, Kenyon, they only have a 206 million dollar endowment.....that is very very low comparatively. Probably because they actually use that money to educate their students.

Comparable schools: Oberlin 814M, Denison 800M, Wooster 250M, Dayton 518M.

But here are the largest per student endowments:

Look at #25...that is where my daughter attends.

If they would only give the normal amount to each student, they would give grants of almost 20,000....they only give half of that. ...about 11K.

On a per student basis.....they actually have more than half the Ivy League schools do. They have more than Cornell where my son goes to grad school (and he is on a full ride there)

This finally seals it for me: Here is the list of schools that give the highest "non-need" based aid:

Cooper Union

New York, NY

68% Webb Institute

Glen Cove, NY

66% Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering

Needham, MA

51% Rhodes College

Memphis, TN

50% Trinity University

San Antonio, TX

47%

Her school is #5. They give lots of money to kids that don't "need it"......While I agree, that is merit based aid....and my daughter has failed in terms of merit...as she has not been a good student. I regret sending her there...as she wasn't able to compete academically. And apparently that is what they are all about.

Sorry about the personal rant everyone. I am sure many of you have had your issues.

Tom- this would be my rant. What in the f**king hell is Harvard doing with all that money? Consulting my friendly on line calculator- $38 billion invested in 1.4% 10 year treasury bills = $532 million PER YEAR. That alone would be enough to completely pay the University of Dayton's total expenses in that time frame- and then some.

As I said earlier- it should be free tuition should you get accepted. The endowment income is more than they collect in undergraduate tuition- and for sure not everyone pays full freight of $72k.

As I said earlier- it should be free tuition should you get accepted. The endowment income is more than they collect in undergraduate tuition- and for sure not everyone pays full freight of $72k.

Harvard has about 6700 undergrad students.....but more than double that in professional/grad students. They have 21,000 overall students. So I suspect a lot of their money is invested in their graduate programs....more than their UG.

But, I guess, to be certain, that I am the beneficiary of a similar situation. Cornell has about 22,000 overall students, but about 14,500 of those are undergrads, and about 7500 are grad/professional students. (the opposite of Harvard's numbers) My son gets a full ride....and is paid like 32K per year to work for the school teaching and doing lab research.

So, maybe that is where a lot of their money goes.

Cornell's endowment is about 6 Billion. Note: that is an Ivy League school with 21,000 students....and had an endowment size per student of 276,000 per student My daughter's school is in the top 25 in endowment size per student with $476,000.

Yet, they are skinflints when it comes to providing need base financial aid. They specifically told me that they are not committed to meeting the financial needs of their student......and based on some developments.....I am not sure that they are committed to the actual education of their students. My daughter needed some help with her academics. From my point of view...they did fuck all to help her. They practically, literally said fuck you to her when she was having problems.

And FYI....while Harvard has the largest endowment....Princeton and Yale actually have higher per pupil endowments. Harvard has those 21K overall students....but Princeton only has a bit over 8000 and Yale only 12K. not sure how their undergrad vs. grad ratio is.

So, yes, I equate these schools to Smaug the Dragon, they just fucking lay and sleep on their gold.

And that is why I am so high on Kenyon.....only a 200 mill endowment. They use their fucking money to educate their students. (They have no graduate programs)

And this is a school that has produced a President of the United States, a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a Prime Minister of Sweden, a Secretary of State...and on and on.

And what has my daughter's school produced? A fucking guy that dresses up in a purple dinosaur uniform (yes, the guy that played Barney went to Trinity), a woman who is better know for her tits and ass than her brains (Jaclyn Smith)....and a drunk driving murderer who inherited her money and who uses it to buy her way out of criminal charges.

As pretty as she is, she always came off phony to me. Though, I guess that is what fellatio is for....to keep them shut up.

But...women would say Paul Newman...who went to Kenyon.

I understand Zombo's Identity Crisis. He can't tell if he is from Indiana or Pennsylvania.

That is OK....a number of other place in Pennsylvania have the same problem as there is the following in that state the following cities:

California, Pennsylvania

Oklahoma, Pennsylvania

Washington, Pennsylvania

Wyoming, Pennsylvania

(New) Texas, Pennsylvania

Delaware (Water Gap) Pennsylvania

Ohio(ville), Pennsylvania

Ohio(pyle), Pennsylvania

There is even Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania (actually Pennsylvania Furnace)

And they can't keep track of which country they are in as there is a Newfoundland, Pennsylvania.

Doh!

But, we in Ohio shouldn't rag on PA about its identity crisis. The following cites exist in Ohio (with populations where I could find them):

Delaware...20,000

Florida..300

Idaho

Kansas

Nevada...800

(New) California

New Hampshire

Ohio (City)...900

Oregon..18.300

Texas

Washington C.H.

Wyoming. 8100

Of course, we drove to the wrong one first...
