Northeast Ohio sports fans get bonanza this week with Indians, Browns, Firestone, Hall of Fame

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sports fans in Northeast Ohio are blessed with three professional teams to follow. Win or lose, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Indians and Browns provide plenty of storylines of varying degrees for 12 months.

When special events come to the area, the potential exists for a bonanza. The upcoming week (July 31-Aug. 6) meets all the criteria -- and then some.

The Indians, first place in the AL Central and on fire, face two legendary franchises. They visit the Boston Red Sox for three games and play host to the New York Yankees for four games.

The Indians return to Fenway Park on Monday for the first time since sweeping the Red Sox in the 2016 American League Division Series. Hopefully, the Red Sox will have another activity involving David Ortiz to distract them.

The Yankees, as a member of the AL East, come to Cleveland once a year. This particular season, they are battling the Red Sox for division supremacy and feature such young stars as outfielder Aaron Judge and catcher Gary Sanchez and recently promoted outfielder Clint Frazier, the former Indians prospect who was traded last year as part of the Andrew Miller deal.

Progressive Field undoubtedly will be packed each day, with plenty of fans arriving early for the night games to watch the spectacle that is New York Yankees Batting Practice. Provided that 2017 Home Run Derby participants Judge and Sanchez, in particular, are healthy and in the mood, the BP balls figure to travel high and far....

The Cavaliers are in their offseason, but they have the NBA -- and the sports world, in general -- waiting to see what happens with Kyrie Irving.

Joining Cleveland's major professional teams on the upcoming week's stage are men's pro golfers (WGC-Bridgestone Invitational) and legends of football (Hall of Fame induction festivities). The WGC-Bridgestone, though not a major, boasts a loaded field that includes newly minted British Open champion Jordan Spieth and 2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia.

CLEVELAND ROCKS!

UH-OH....

BOSTON (AP) — The Cleveland Indians’ pitching staff has taken two big hits: All-Star Andrew Miller is on the disabled list, and starter Josh Tomlin is out six weeks.

Miller was placed on the DL on Wednesday with right knee tendinitis, an injury that could explain his recent wildness.

One of baseball’s best relievers, Miller pitched in Tuesday night’s 12-10 loss at Boston, giving up Eduardo Nunez’s three-run double off the Green Monster.

Miller is 4-3 with two saves and a 1.67 ERA in 46 appearances this season. He was acquired at the trading deadline last year from the New York Yankees, and the left-hander was instrumental in Cleveland making it to the World Series for the first time since 1997.

He has not been himself lately, walking 10 batters in the past 21 innings. Miller only walked nine batters in 74 1/3 innings last season.

The Indians recalled right-hander Adam Plutko from Triple-A Columbus to take Miller’s spot on the active roster.

As for Tomlin, his season could be in jeopardy after an MRI confirmed a “mild-to-moderate” left hamstring tendon strain. The Indians said Tomlin is expected to miss at least six weeks before he can return to major league games........

IS THIS A PREVIEW OF THINGS TO COME? WATCH AND SEE......

Danny Salazar dazzles again, Cleveland Indians crush five home runs to win fifth straight, 8-1

http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2017/08/cleveland_indians_minnesota_tw_142.html

In a scene straight out of the '90s, Bartolo Colon manned the mound and the Indians belted a bunch of home runs.

Only, Colon was pitching for the Twins, not his former franchise. And the Indians' lineup backed Danny Salazar with five home runs as they collected their fifth straight win, this time by an 8-1 score in the series opener in Minnesota.

Austin Jackson's three-run blast broke the game open in the seventh. The poor, innocent baseball traveled 386 feet and landed in the left-field seats, one pitch after Carlos Santana placed an infield single a few feet in front of home plate.

The Indians' first three home runs came at the expense of Colon, a 44-year-old marvel who signed with Cleveland in June 1993, about five months before Francisco Lindor was born. The 23-year-old greeted his elder with a leadoff single in the first.

Edwin Encarnacion's solo shot produced the most noticeable gasp from the Target Field crowd. The ball, after a quick orbit around the solar system, landed in the last row of the second deck in left field. Encarnacion has clubbed five homers in his last five games. He hit a pair at Fenway Park on Monday.........REST OF STORY IN LINK......
