Not in my book as I see neither the arm strength nor a demonstrated read capability plus I have some fragility concerns. But he played well tonite with little run support. Mariota was unfortunate to have some drops by receivers, Jones was fortunate to not have passes defended better, but the key difference was the running game. He is an incredible talent when it comes to escaping pressure, keeping his eyes down field and making quick, decisive throws. That elusiveness I think will easily translate to the NFL. He's also got the size you look for although they may want him to gain 15 pounds. Our Buckeyes just beat the dog crap out of the Ducks in every way possible, and if it weren't for self-induced turnovers I have no doubt in my mind they would have won by 35+ BUT, his pocket passing leaves a good amount to be desired. I think this is going to be an issue many QB's face moving forward, but he's not a guy you want to start week 1. Almost every 3rd and long they rushed only 3 which was ridiculous. That does not make him a great QB, but it would give me pause as HC to fire one DC who had a horrible game plan. #15 was the difference in the game. They have similar skill sets and they both lack the ability to throw a football with velocity. Tom Brady went in the sixth round because "he didn't have enough arm". After being drafted by the Pats he worked on arm strength and mechanics and by anyones admission is a great NFL QB. Would Mariota be able to do this? Maybe. He does have the character (lacking in Twatziel) to put in the work to get better, and to learn to be a pocket passer. Is he a first round pick? After this, probably not. When the Oregon D line got to Cardale, and they did regularly, he punked them. When the opposing QB runs and knockes the nose tackle back or on his ass then the QB is punking the defense. A bowl loss by an underdog really sank his draft status. And the same thing when Florida beat OSU in the championship - Troy Smith slid to 6th round status in a hurry. Isn't Mariotta a Junior? A lot of the throws in the Oregon offense are timing based. They may be "simple" but the throw has to be quick and decisive or else it's incomplete or worse. Use your brain here it's not hard to understand. Of course I'm sure you are still too consumed about the fact DA was 2-0 as a starter this year. So he isn't ready to be that yet. No big freaking deal. Ohio State played a GREAT GAME and they have a GREAT COACH. That was one of the greatest all time college games we'll ever see, I think. BTW, ....Ohio State won with a big kid at qb...who only had three starts..... wow. And Manziel says he sucked for his first year and a half....... Well, when they rushed Cardale, he either moved in the pocket- or ran them over- including that 315 pound nose tackle. But- if they were dropping 8, he also made some pinpoint bombs into tight coverage. That laser he tossed over the middle through the Oregon D has to be one of the most amazing throws I've ever seen- college or Pros. Meyer was a terror in the SEC - 2 championships (including 1 against OSU). After the first Oregon drive he got smart and played containment football. Hold the outside with the ends, squeeze with linebackers and let the stretched out O line deal with the tackles. Mario had no place to go. He is a brilliant strategist and since he mellowed after his heart issue, he has become an even better coach. Great game and hats off to OSU. Without a playoff they never would have got that chance.
