Tour's 2016, "Dammit I'm trying to watch this guy, not you", Distraction List

Every year I watch game cutdowns of OL, there are always a few that are more challenging because I find my attention drawn to another player. If I'm lucky it's a defender and thus a one-game distraction, but sometimes it's a teammate, a persistently promising-looking teammate.

I just ran into my first two for 2016... both on the same team. Double dammit?

Starting a running list here linked to mini-blurbs about them. Feel free to add you own distractions.

Taywon Taylor (WR, WKU, 5'11 198) DS projects R3-4 - fast, est'd 4.39 fast, one drop, deep TD, nice ovr should fade catch - TD, nice slant;

Taylor has "take the lid off" speed and more skills making more than simply a fast guy. And he plays bigger than 5'11. I'd started FirstPicking him in recent days before I even saw his tape and for whatever reason it was a good, if relatively uninformed, decision to do so. nice Day 2 or 3 sleeper pick.

Anthony Wales (RB, WKU, 5'9 194) DS projects UDFA - nifty, shifty, uses/set up blocks well, some power vs. DBs

If Taylor is a sleeper then Wales is comatose. He's DraftScouts 37th ranked Rb in the draft, if that is deservedly low, then I really need to see those above him. An estimated 40 time of 4.59 might be responsible but you have to see him in action. Very smooth... very versatile... 1000-yd rusher for WKU.

  • 2 weeks later...

Not really fitting your def of "distractions I saw while watching others".......but here are a few guys I see going mid/late mid rounds who I think are gonna be hits and, while having fair rankings, are players no one seems to be talking about much......if we can tap these guys 3rd/4th etc, then I see sleeper potential....

#1 is(was) Curtis Samuel, who is racing up the charts.....I was regularly tapping him in the late 3rd or 4th on my mocks....now he's gone late 1st or early 2nd ....everytime.....too bad, as he was one I was hoping to grab and see blossom into a versatile star...ala Eric Metcalf or Desmond Howard typa player...

#2 is Marcus Maye....one of my favorites in this draft.....he would be a great grab for us, unless we opt to go high on Hooker or Adams(which I would be down with 100%)....but I think Maye could give us a top top safety for a great price.....

#3 is Adoree Jackson.....now being mocked in the 3rd/4th rounds?.....reallY?.....This guy can do it all.....CB...WR....KR....FS...And the weird thing is that his versatility is why he's not rated higher....the ole jack of all trades, but master of none?......w/o consideration to the ole "too good to not be on the field" argument....grab him!!!

#4 is James Conner......RB.....BIG and fast.....possibly could be our next Kevin Mackish type of runner?.........I think 4th 5th round would be a great value pick for this guy.....

love watching a good defensive front & damn Clemson has got one. Viewing a Gregg Williams DT in Carlos Watkins to put him next to Shelton BUT the kid they had at DT last season that they moved to DE this season #42-Christian Wilkins-6'4" 310lbs.(bigger than Watkins) & built like a Mini Mack truck..Wilkins is a Sophomore(sorry)140 tackles,17.5 for lost & 5.5 sacks in 16 games. Well, It's Cleveland & we always have a Next Year too..

James Conner would be a great pick for the Browns if Crow walks or they can pick him up with a 5th. He is a power back that can actually catch the ball.

What a story on this kid. Even with a left knee sprain, Conner won ACCPOY in 14. In 15 Connor blows MCL in Right knee, ending season. Than to find out in a few weeks that he has the same hodgkins lymphoma cancer that cost his fathers own life. Kicks the cancer. Hits spring Practices in 16 wearing a protective mask to prepare. complete story at CBS..But congrats on a no quit in the kid or the game he loves & Good Luck

That sounds like the kind of high character kid this FO looks for.

Love the choice of topic. One of the QBs we had here for a cup of coffee (Jeff Brohm) has a pretty good football program at Western Kentucky as evidenced by what you found.

Reuben Foster steals the show a lot when I'm watching Allen remain unselfish in the scheme that permits the Bama LBers to succeed. Even more so than scheme, his 1-step instinct is unparalleled.

I clearly need to start looking at more film of prospects projecting to go after round 1.

At the Senior Bowl, I'd have to say the guy who pleasantly surprised me the most was the 6'1" 195 lb Safety from St Francis - Lorenzo Jerome, who caused 3 turnovers from a great nose for the football. Seeing that, reminds me this is a deep enough draft on the defensive side of the ball to the extent if we can select a BPA on the offensive side of the ball at #12 if the situation presents itself. Aside from that, undrafted corners like Boddy-Calhoun and K'Wuan Williams have helped this team way more than Justin Gilbert ever did in round 1.

Another guy I liked at the Senior Bowl was 6'5" QB Davis Webb who hadn't received nearly the same hype as other QBs in this draft. We can probably land him anywhere from our 2nd pick in round 2 to the top of round 3. I'm guessing I'm not the only one that wants to consider the alternatives to spending our 1st pick on a QB so teams feeling the same way may reach up for a guy like this as early as round 2 or 3.

Watching OJ Howard at the Senior Bowl ledto the intrigue for me to watch his 6:44 highlight of him X-factoring the last Bama National Championship. He had about 85-90 yards in just 1 quarter of action at the Senior Bowl following a great week there.

6'2" 225 lb Toledo RB Kareem Hunt looked really good for the mid rounds I'd expect us to consider a RB in this draft.

6'4" 311 lb Indiana OL Dan Feeney looked really solid and I think he projects well at OG in this league, which just so happens to be a position we have 2 starters trying to return from unpredictable foot injuries at.

Here's a very bad first impression I got at the Senior Bowl, which might not end up fair to the bigger body of work he might have put in during the regular season. The OL from Pitt (Adam Bisnowaty) with the blonde haired Repunzel look was a nightmare in pass pro at the Senior Bowl.

Combine will be huge for Conner. DS estimates his 40 time as 4.67... That's really pushing his acceptability NFL speed-wise.

That said... I like his tape. The kid is a very smart, tough runner. If nothing else, at 240 he might find a home at FB in the NFL... a FB with skills that would warrant more than one, token carry per game.

Stepping back for a second to reread it... maybe the above is K.Mack-ish.

More midgets tour?

Well... whoever distracts distracts...

Not sure how 5'11 qualifies as "midget". Taywan reminded me of KC sensation, Tyreek 5'8 Hill. I don't see anything on our roster like him.

While watching the national championship game for potential top pick guys, the dude who stood out the most in this vein to me was Ben Boulware, LB from Clemson.

You can easily tell the physical limitations but the guy was doing a damn good job diagnosing the Alabama plays and shifting guys around. He's got a pretty marked weakness in pass coverage but I think is well worth a shot with a late 5th or 6th round pick. The mental awareness and passion is there which to me is critical at that position.

When I was scouting up on Myles Garrett I kept noticing the other side and was like, "who's this dude?"

Daeshon Hall is a monster.

Battling the flu the past few days, so I'm held up in bed right now. I've got mah tablet here.

Who should I watch first?

feel better. I feel we need a CB. It's deep, but 2nd or 3rd rounder maybe needed now that Tramon Williams is out. This Past Wednesday i got torn viewing between OSU-Gareon Conley vs Clemson-Cordrea Tankersley & USC-Adoee Jackson..Williams seems 60% Nickle, but actually saw some press coverage also in Rams corners..Who you like? (ignoring a Buckeye helmet ;))?

I know I've heard a ton of hype on Adoree because of his athletic ability. Said ability doesn't often translate into being a good corner. You must have discipline, footwork, fluid change of direction and a great feel or the subtle tips in a receivers route.

I guess that means I'll be watching some Jackson for the next hour or two.

Bingo..And the great bowl game with Penn State I began to question the so-called experts on Adoree. No doubt the kid has great return skills but lets not just draft return skills..

Been watching tape from 2015 and 2016 on Adoree'. Theme - a physically talented kid, great athlete with fluid movement in feet and hips, light feet, long arms and great potential.

Though I see some work on technique from his second to third year, he is still incredibly raw for the position. Making his bones simply by being a better athlete with great makeup speed.

His discipline in opening up his hips is poor, he lunges with an open stance quite a bit to get jams... not sure who the hell taught him that - and runs high on his receiver more often than not.

But as I said, great makeup speed. When he's in his back-peddle, plants and drives he's able to close quickly to breakup passes and appears to be slightly above average at tackling. He's no Haden in his prime, sure not

Winfield, but he isn't a sissy about it either. Still some room on his frame for a few more quality pounds.

His light feet and hip work are like watching Lattimore. Only he doesn't have the discipline on the underneath stuff and rounds out to path to the receiver when trailing or going for the ball. Though, again, he makes up for that with awesome closing speed. If you go Jackson, be prepared to watch a lot of growing pains and a young man that is going to need to hit the ground running with his position coach. You won't see a lot of fruit from the labor until midway through year 2 at best.

As a return man he's above average, but he has a tenancy to carry the ball sloppy. A couple of times he could have had it poked out but secured it quickly before contact. A few by design, a few by shear luck.

In all honesty I'd compare him to a little smaller Marcus Peter's. He has all the physical traits in the world and the great flip from his hips, but discipline, footwork and film will be where he needs the biggest improvement.

Awesome breakdown right there Tia,thanks. Seems a lot(or just us) of drafted CB's have that Buster Skrine "pick on me" season.(Gilbert too) than the athletic ability needs to catch up with the proper technique & film studies to see it for themselves. But, putting a Gregg Williams in their ear may help..Thanks again & get better. Your in fine Combine grading form as usual..
