WHAT? Gang member who killed a cop in California had been RELEASED EARLY from custody!

This is really unbelievable. According to the LA Times, the gang member who shot and killed one police officer and injured another this morning in California was release early and let back out on the streets:

Whittier Police Chief Jeff Piper broke down in tears recounting Boyer, whom he described as a close friend and beloved member of the department. He said Boyer was a mentor to others in the department and had recently talked about retiring.

“He was the best of the best,” Piper said tearfully during a Monday afternoon news conference. “This is an unbelievably senseless tragedy.”

Piper said the shooting suspect, whose name has not been made public, was released from custody early. He blamed the early release on a series of new laws designed to reduce incarcerations in California.

Neither Piper nor the Sheriff’s Department offered specific information about his record or how he was released early. But the chief said Boyer’s killing showed how these laws have made the streets less safe.

“We need to wake up. Enough is enough,” he said.

So if he was released 6-12 months later, totally diff story? He would have been a good boy? Obviously he showed something in prisin that qualified him for early release. They got it wrong on him, but the prisons have to make room for new inmates so sometimes a judgement call has to be made. We dont know what the guy was in for either do we?

That is a valid point but it is hard to explain that to the family of the slain officer. We know from the police chief this murderer was released early due to new laws put in place by California. Maybe they should take another look at those new laws.

It's a catch 22. We have overpopulated prisons that we are trying to bring down but in doing so there is a cost to society with some of them being released early only to commit more havoc on society earlier.

And Trump seems like the president to do that? There's a reason private prison stocks rose sharply the day after the election.

Private prisons. FFS. Seriously.

I never said a thing about Trump or private prisons. I said this is the problem and there is not any easy answer.
