Well isn't THIS just peachy? The position we're most thin...ugh.

BEREA, Ohio — Browns nickelback K'Waun Williams is waiting for a second opinion on his ankle, but is expected back with the team soon, a league source told cleveland.com.

Williams, who's been in a battle with Jamar Taylor for the starting nickelback job, did not attend the Browns preseason opener in Green Bay Friday night and has missed the last two days of practice here. The club announced it was for a personal reason and has declined to elaborate.

But the source said Williams, the Browns' starting nickelback the past two seasons, is dealing with an ankle issue and is in the process of getting a second opinion from a specialist. Williams was hoping to seen one in Charlotte, N.C., but is now planning to return to Cleveland for that exam, the source said.

He said Williams will be able to attend meetings, but probably won't be able to begin practicing yet. The source said Williams' issue has nothing to do with his history of concussions.

Before he left, Williams was in a heated battle with Taylor for the nickelback job that Williams had last season, when he played in 13 games and started six.

"Both of those kids, football is very important to them,'' defensive backs coach Louie Cijoffi said last week. "There's a saying that iron sharpens iron. Just like they are out there, these guys are competing with each other. At the end of the day, we'll end up with two really good football players that are going to help us win games."

Taylor, a second-round pick of the Dolphins in 2013 who didn't live up to his draft status there, the Browns traded for him on draft day this year. As it stands, he's now the frontrunner for the demanding nickel post.

"In Jamar's case, he's a true professional,'' said Cioffi. "He's embraced the challenge. He's come in and he's worked really hard both on and off the field. He takes coaching really well. He really has a really good athletic skillset. He can play both on the outside and he can play inside. Like I said, I'm excited to see him play in games. I'm glad we got him."

Why hometown boy Jamie Meder is getting a chance to start for the Browns

Parma Heights, Ohio native Jamie Meder is being a given a chance to start for the Browns at right end, ahead of Xavier Cooper.

Coiffi cited Taylor's "knowledge of football, his awareness of football, just being a natural football player, No.1, but then his really good quickness, that really helps when you're inside there'' as reasons he'll make a good nickelback.

Cioffi preferred not to dwell on why Taylor didn't pan out in Miami.

"I try not to talk about what they've done other places because I don't know what they were asked to do,'' Cioffi. "All I know is what we coach and what we expect from them."

Last season, Williams totaled 38 tackles, one sack, two passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

I knew he wasn't a starter...

"Expected back soon" sounds good, but I did not realize he was in a close competition with Taylor.

Man T, every single man on the roster better be in competition with someone.... If not, it's Pettine Ball all over again.

Hey T, how in the world do I 'ignore' someone (Ghoo..)

lol... even a thread a week is too much?

The Management has simplified it... probably in preparation for his return... ;)

Upper right corner... click on your screen name... lower right of drop window you'll see "Manage Ignore Prefs"...

I hear ya, D.... just was not aware it was "close"...

It cant be close....Taylor stood out as "not looking good" in the game, which has been his issue since he was drafted.....Kwaun has a solid 2 year history of exceptional(top stuff) kind of play.....

The whole competition thing is just coach speak.....if he's healthy, it'll be kwaun

and Im really sorry to hear he could be down, cause we need him......

Williams was suspended and docked a game check? Evidently he us upset at his status on the team? Anyone know what he did?

Make sure you have the right Williams. :)

Uh, what the hell, man?! K'Waun had tremendous injury concerns, but he could be a terrific nickel corner when healthy. Apparently the coaches weren't happy about Williams "scratching himself" from a recent practice, and also getting a second opinion. There are protocols to follow and perhaps he didn't do it correctly. I don't know, but I can definitely tell something is very wrong, and it wouldn't surprise me if Williams was cut. I hate to think that because we're so thin at DB, but it has that smell to it.

I hope this all gets worked out. We are going to need K'waun, he played pretty good last year. Even if Haden stays healthy all season, Tramon has lost a step and Jamar Taylor hasn't shown much. Real game action could quickly expose Taylor or Tramon, and K'waun could easily move into a starting spot.

This is getting crazy. I really hope cooler heads prevail, but this has the makings of a terrible cluster chicken. Suspending a player for a game is NO JOKE, and is not done lightly. I hate this crap.

Such is life with a "player's coach"... :o

I'm guessing there is more to the story and it sounds like Hue is following through with the 'crap from you guys won't be tolerated' stuff.

Jamar Taylor somehow went under my radar, former second round pick we got in a draft position trade, just 25 years old.

I am now officially intrigued, gonna watch him tomorrow night.

I wonder how much of this stems from K'waun's injury and concussion history. He might of felt ok with playing for a series or two since that's what the 1st team would of played. After getting put on the 2nd team and knowing he would have to play alot more he decided the injury risk was too much for a preseason game. After Haden had that arm injury last year and tried to play through it, ending in a concussion, I don't blame K'waun being iffy about playing injuried.

The "offered a full workload" strikes me as odd for the first preseason game. He has shown to be a solid corner at the slot and as fill in for the #2 spot in his last two season. I don't think he is in the Gilbert or Mingo position to show me something to keep you on the roster. If he had any injury, he shouldn't of been at a full workload for a preseason game, he is important to this defense even as the 4th corner.

That's just speculation, and the team and Hue know what really went on, so I'll side with them as the last thing a coach wants to do is suspend players that help him win and therefore keep his job.

Hue obviously has the final say, but this had to come up through Horton.

The stranger has a speculative point about the concussion risk, but it is not exactly far-fetched.

As for helping the coach win... if he was demoted to 2nd string, then the coach wasn't all that high on him.

IMHO, a large part of why so many players are "all in" with Hue is that he (unlike a previous HC) doesn't go public with player issues/concerns. He keeps it in house & has the player's trust as a result. I, as usual, am not buying media speculation as fact. The fact is that Williams is suspended 2 games. Why? We may never know the whole story, but it is what it is, so GO BROWNS!

K'Waun Williams told he needs ankle surgery; will appeal Browns' suspension and fine

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Browns cornerback K'Waun Williams was told by a specialist today that he needs surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle "in order for him to perform as a professional,'' his agent told cleveland.com.
As a result, Williams will appeal his two-game suspension and one-game fine by the Browns.
"We will appeal the suspension and fine through the NFLPA,'' Krakower said.
The fine amounts to more than $35,000 or 1/17th of his $600,000 salary.
A league source said Williams left the Green Bay game Friday night claiming he was going to retire and then came back the next day saying his ankle was injured.
But a source close to Williams said the nickelback made the team aware on Friday night that the sore ankle was the reason he couldn't play.
Williams had the second opinion on the ankle at the Cleveland Clinic Wednesday at about 5 p.m.
NFL Network reported that Williams opted not to play because nickelback Jamar Taylor was starting ahead of him, but the source told cleveland.com that was untrue.
The source said Williams was still ailing from the ankle injury first suffered while defending Rashard Higgins on a pass from Robert Griffin III in the Orange and Browns scrimmage at Ohio State. He was seen by a trainer after coming up limping that day and received treatment the day before the Packers game.
More to come soon.
