  3. ~ AND ~ Finally. 13. Congrats to Carlos Carrasco, who made the team. Carrasco turned 37 on March 21. The next day, he received the good news that he’d open the season with Cleveland, either in the starting rotation or bullpen. Carrasco had a 2.57 ERA this spring. If he’s healthy, he could be effective. In 2022, he was 15-7 with a 3.98 ERA for the Mets. He battled injuries in 2023 and was 3-8 with a 3.80 ERA. 4. Myles Straw, the player, the deal, everything. It appears Myles Straw is headed to the minors. By Terry Pluto, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Scribbles in my notebook as the Guardians’ regular season approaches: 1. When the Guardians traded reliever Phil Maton and a Class A prospect named Yainer Diaz to Houston for Myles Straw, I loved the trade. Cleveland needed a center fielder. This was on July 30, 2021. Straw was batting .265 (.665 OPS) and was an elite center fielder for the Astros. He also was a career .305 hitter (.773) in the minors. 2. Straw came to Cleveland and batted .285 (.739 OPS) in 2021. He didn’t have much power, but reached base and looked like he could be their center fielder for years. On April 9, 2022, Straw signed a five-year, $25 million extension. Seemed like a decent deal. He was coming off that .285 season. He was sensational in center field. Stories by Terry Pluto Afraid of Alzheimer's? A stroke? Of not measuring up? This is for you – Terry Pluto's Faith & You Looking back at Myles Straw deal, picking a shortstop – Terry Pluto’s Guardian Scribbles As Akron leaves NCAA Tournament, some words about more than winning and losing – Terry Pluto 3. Then he stopped hitting, period. In 2022-23, he batted .228 (.578 OPS). In 1,114 plate appearances, he hit one homer and 42 doubles. He stole 42 bases. He looked hopeless at the plate to the point where the Guardians have designated him for assignment. That means any MLB team can claim him. But if a team does that, they have to pick up the three years and $19 million left on his contract. 4. Odds are Straw will clear waivers. He has a minor league option left, meaning the Guardians will probably send him to Class AAA Columbus. And that means they’ll have a new center fielder – likely Tyler Freeman. They have sounded serious about Freeman in the outfield since early March. It's his job. Brayan Rocchio is set to open the season as Cleveland's starting shortstop. 6. I’m glad they’re giving Brayan Rocchio the first chance at shortstop. He ended the spring strong, hitting .270 (.767 OPS). This came after Rocchio led his Dominican winter league team to a title, hitting .328 (.848 OPS) in 128 plate appearances. 7. I don’t become excited about winter league stats unless they are bad, and the player in question is young. Gabriel Arias hit .214 (.543 OPS) in Puerto Rico. He didn’t have a homer in 118 plate appearances. This spring, Arias batted .206 (.623). He was 7 of 34 with nine strikeouts. 8. Arias has made the team. I wish I had a better feeling about Arias. He’s had 402 career MLB plate appearances with 129 strike outs, hitting .207 (.630 OPS). When a guy doesn’t hit in the winter league and then spring training when battling for a roster spot, I wonder about him. Arias is 24. He does have a minor league option left. The Guardians are keeping him on the roster because he can play every spot on the diamond except catcher. Arias is 24. He has 806 Class AAA plate appearances, batting .267 (.768 OPS). So perhaps they saw no reason to send him back to Columbus, believing now is the time to find out if Arias will hit. At the age of 37, Carlos Carrasco has earned a roster spot with the Guardians. 10. The Guardians decided to keep Estevan Florial. They went into spring training wanting him to prove worthy of a roster spot. They traded Cody Morris to the Yankees for him. Florial has had a dismal spring at the plate, batting .159 (.427 OPS) with one extra base hit and 20 strikeouts in 44 at-bats. Florial is out of minor league options. Florial has played 280 games at the Class AAA level. Their view is “either he’s MLB ready now or he’s not.” Florial batted .284 (940 OPS) with 28 HR and 25 stolen bases in Class AAA last season. 11. Morris had a rough spring with New York, He allowed eight earned runs in 6 ⅔ innings and was sent to minors. 12. No surprise the Guardians said Chase DeLauter won’t play any more big league games in the spring. I have written for a while that he and fellow phenom Kyle Manzardo were ticketed for the minors. DeLauter batted .520 (13 of 25) this spring with four homers. He has only 242 pro at-bats. He’s played only six games above the Class A level. They want to look at some other players as he adds experience. ▪︎--> a little more CONTINUED ▪︎-->

  6. Hey Dutch, nice to see your insight on this and any other topics. Always spot on. mjp.
  7. Well I ended up getting sick and ended up in the hospital so I will miss the tournament this year. I will miss that.
  8. ~ AND ~ We would like your questions amd comments on the 2024 GUARDIANS pitching and the team to Opening Day. Should be interesting to say the least.
  9. ~ AND ~ To wrap it up. As for the middle infielders, Mandy Bell of MLB.com tweets that Rocchio is expected to get the bulk of shortstop reps with Arias in a utility role. The Guardians have a huge number of shortstop options, something that MLBTR’s Anthony Franco looked at last month. It’s likely a fluid situation that will evolve over time but Rocchio will get a crack at taking the job for now. He made his major league debut last year and hit just .247/.279/.321, though in a small sample of 86 plate appearances. His Triple-A batting line was a much nicer .280/.367/.421 last year and he’ll hope to bring some of that production up to the big leagues this season.
  10. ~ AND ~ To carry on with the starting pitching. The Guards came into camp with a rotation consisting of Shane Bieber, Triston McKenzie and last year’s rookies Tanner Bibee, Logan Allen and Gavin Williams. But it was reported last week that Williams will open the season on the injured list due to some right elbow discomfort, which opened a spot at the back end. That spot will go to Carrasco, who Cleveland fans will be plenty familiar with. He pitched for the club from 2009 through 2020, before going to the Mets as part of the Francisco Lindor deal. He tossed 1,242 1/3 innings during his previous stint in Cleveland with a 3.77 earned run average. His time in Queens has been a bit rockier. He has a 4.78 ERA over the past three years, including a mark of 6.80 last year. He had stints on the IL last year due to right elbow inflammation and a right pinky finger fracture, limiting him to 90 innings with uninspiring results. His previous Cleveland tenure resulted in a 25.5% strikeout rate and 6.3% walk rate but those numbers were at 15.8% and 9.1% with the Mets last year. t’s a bit of a belated birthday present for Carrasco, who turned 37 yesterday. He and the Guardians will be hoping that a return to Cleveland can get him back to his old form. Beede, 31 in May, was once a highly-touted youngster. He was selected 14th overall by the Giants back in 2014 and was considered to be a top 100 prospect as he climbed the minor league ladder. Unfortunately, he struggled in his first tastes of the majors and then required Tommy John surgery in 2020, wiping out that year and much of the next. He had a 5.14 ERA in 2022 and headed to Japan last year. The move overseas seems to have got him back on track. He posted a 3.99 ERA for the Yomiuri Giants in 49 2/3 relief innings. That got him a minor league deal with the Guardians and he’s looked well in spring so far, with 10 2/3 innings pitched with a 1.69 ERA. That will get him back onto a big league roster via the Cleveland bullpen, though he is now out of options and will need to stick in the majors or else be made available to other clubs, either via waivers or a trade.
  11. GUARDIANS announce starting pitching rotation and MORE ! / AND THE MYLES STRAW STORY. Carlos Carrasco, Tyler Beede Make Guardians’ Opening Day Roster By Steve Adams | March 22, 2024 at 12:40pm CDT The Guardians have informed right-handers Carlos Carrasco and Tyler Beede that they’ve made the team’s Opening Day roster, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Both were in camp on minor league deals. Cleveland also informed catcher David Fry and infielders Gabriel Arias, Brayan Rocchio and Tyler Freeman that they’ll open the season on the big league roster. Carrasco had an opt-out clause in his contract today but that won’t end up coming into play. Both Carrasco and Beede will need to be formally selected to the 40-man roster before Opening Day. The Guards will need to make a pair of corresponding moves to clear space. One can be opened by placing Trevor Stephan, who’s set to undergo Tommy John surgery, on the 60-day IL, but they’ll need a second spot. The other spot could depend on the status of outfielder Myles Straw, who has been placed on waivers.

  13. ▪︎ Another former CLE player retires, Kole Calhoun 36 w/10+ years in MLB. Former Guardians’ slugger announces retirement, Kole Calhoun, 36 From Chad Krispinsky - WKBN - TV 27 Cleveland Guardians' Kole Calhoun heads to first base after hitting a two-run home run off Texas Rangers relief pitcher Ian Kennedy during the seventh inning of a baseball game in Cleveland on Friday, Sept. 15, 2023.
