The Gipper
I realize I am a little late on this after the BCS title game was concluded a couple of weeks or so ago, but here is the now updated total on the number of Division 1 National Championships won by various schools throughout history. And remember, college football history goes back a long way, to the 1870s: Yale.........18 Princeton..16 Notre Dame...13 Alabama....10 (includes this last title) Harvard......8 Michigan.....8 USC..........8 Oklahoma...7 Minnesota...6 Ohio State...5 Miami.........5 Nebraska....5 Pitt............5 Penn........4 Penn St.....4 Texas......4 LSU.........4 Florida.....3 Ga. Tech...3 Michigan St...3 Army......3 California..3 Cornell.....2 Illinois......2 Texas A&M...2 Tennessee...2 Florida St. ...2 Washington...1 Colorado......1 Brigham Young...1 Clemson.....1 Georgia.....1 Syracuse....1 Auburn.......1 UCLA........1 Maryland....1 TCU..........1 Stanford.....1 U. of Chicago...1 Lafayette........
Fooleeze
Are you sure of the accuracy of this list? Because the NCAA recognizes 7 national championships for Ohio State. 1942 Paul Brown AP 9-1 6-1 - 1954 Woody Hayes FWAA, UPI, AP 10-0 7-0 Won Rose Bowl 1957 Woody Hayes FWAA, UPI 9-1 6-1 Won Rose Bowl 1961 Woody Hayes NFF, FWAA 8-0-1 6-0 - 1968 Woody Hayes AP, UPI FWAA 10-0 7-0 Won Rose Bowl 1970 Woody Hayes NFF 9-1 7-0 Lost Rose Bowl 2002 Jim Tressel BCS, AP, USA Today/ESPN 14-0 8-0 Won Fiesta Bowl Not sure about other schools. The Gipper
Are you sure of the accuracy of this list? I don't think the NCAA does any "recognizing" of any National titles in Football. I believe I took my compilation from a Wikipedia source, and I recognized only the main bodies of rankings: AP/UPI/BCS/Coaches Poll...(USA Today). I do not include the 1970 team. If you lose the Rose Bowl as they did to Stanford I believe there is no way the Buckeyes should have been awarded a National Championship....and none of the major polls did. Similarly, in 1961, Ohio State was not rated #1 in any of the major polls. (those NFF and FWAA were really minor polls who awarded their titles BEFORE the bowl games were played). In 1961, Ohio State went undefeated but with a tie to TCU....and OSU REFUSED to play in the Rose Bowl game, though they were invited. In the major polls, OSU had been rated only #2 or #3. Alabama, who went undefeated won the Sugar Bowl over Arkansas thereby finshing with an 11-0 record and was declared the National Champ in all the major polls. It might have helped OSU's cause if they had played in the Rose Bowl, but they declined. And since no major poll gives them titles for those two years, neither can I. The Gipper
I have a hard time respecting football and all accolades associated with it when the players wore leather helmets. Why on earth would you say that? It was quite possibly a far rougher game then. Do you have a hard time respecting the soldiers that fought in the Civil War or the Revolutionary War simply because they weren't carrying M-16s or Uzis? I have a hard time respecting someone who shows no respect for history, and the hardships endured by the people that had to work their way through that history, and that includes something as unimportant as football history. I didn't belittle your post that didn't have a point, so please don't belittle my response. The point is your assumption that is deadass wrong about about people years ago "playing football in a fashion that it would be hard to call it "football". That is an ignorant statement of the primary order, and if you are going to make such an ignorant statement, I am going to call you on it, and belittle that response Did you really expect to saying something as foolish as that and not be called on it? The analogy to war was simple: the game is the same basic game even if the technology is now advanced. (Here is where I go Samuel Jackson on you) If you are hit between the eyes by an M-16 shot or hit between the eyes by a musketball, the end result is the same: you are still dead as f***ing fried chicken. If you are tackled by a guy wearing a leather helmet vs. a guy wearing a fiberglass helmet, your ass is still on the ground. In fact you might be quite a bit sorer because you didn't have all the protective gear they have today. So to "have no respect" for the people that played the game back then is totally absurd. It was difficult in the era of so many different polls awarding so many different championships. I mean, even a few years ago you had a championship awarded by the BCS to LSU, and the same year the AP named USC. I still think though that a school cannot really claim a championship which was awarded to them after the regular season, but then they end up losing their bowl game. (and you may all be right....I only did this analysis with OSU because I am an OSU fan, and am trying to be righteous and not claim something that they do not deserve. Many of the other schools titles may well have the same legitimacy issues that those two that are given to OSU have.)

The answer is simple: You play be the rules that are in place at the time. You just have to deal with the way things were then. You cannot judge them by today's standards. I mean, years from now some people may look back and say "what a joke football was back in the era around 2010" when they didn't decide college football's champion through a legitimate 16 team playoff tournament. How can any champion be considered legitimate who didn't go through the playoff process" Well, the fact is, right here, right now, we do NOT decide our college football champs through a playoff. But the championships awarded now are the way we do it. Just like those guys did it the way they did it back then.

In 1872, a year in which one poster considered this "REAL FOOTBALL," two National Champions were recognized. You know what their records were? 1 Win 0 Losses That's why my original response was: I have a hard time respecting football and all accolades associated with it when the players wore leather helmets. If you want to go KKK on the list that is up to you. I already got heat for not recognizing some OSU titles that some obscure organization had granted them. The Gipper
Thanks for side stepping my question. In 1872, a year in which one poster considered this "REAL FOOTBALL," two National Champions were recognized. You know what their records were? 1 Win 0 Losses That's why my original response was: I don't get how some of you clowns can jump down my back for me considering a sport that awarded a one win team a NATIONAL TITLE was a huge joke. Having 2 National Championships in a single year has happened as recently as 2003, so the fact that 2 champs were named in a single year is no biggie. Again, I only reported the data. You are free to go racist on this list if you want (maybe we should exclude any team that won a title that didn't use black players? If so, erase any title won before about 1960, and any won by a Southern school before about 1972.
