TIL, New York is not the capital of New York.

Is there a good reason that this is the case for a load of places? Like, St Louis isn't the capital of Missouri, Seattle isn't the state capital of Washington etc. My buddy explained that Philly was the capital of the coutnry (or something) at the time, so Harrisburg became state capital of Pennsylvania. But there seems to be a theme of avoiding the big city as the state capital. Or am I imagining it?

I don't think it is that so much...maybe in some cases. In a number of states they chose the biggest city on purpose. A lot of state capitals were chosen for their central location within the state...like Columbus.

If you'd prefer not to click the link here's the definition:

A horse of a kind suitable to be ridden in battle.

Edit: Ungulates are actually large hoofed mammals which a Bill would be a part of. Possibly Steeler fans as well.

" Frank Leahy, picked the Chargers name when he purchased an AFL franchise for Los Angeles: “I liked it because they were yelling ‘charge’ and sounding the bugle at Dodgers Stadium and at USC games.” "

Not technically named after the horse, I guess?

Edit: Just checked the question, it's just asking for those that belong to the group, so I guess yours is good!

All I know is my high school alma mater we're the Chargers and we had a bad ass horse logo.

It might not have been his intent, but that's what it means.

It was Barron Hilton who chose the name Chargers......and he named them after a credit card. He had an interest in like Diner's Club or something. That is how they got there name.

Here is some NFL potpourri trivia. A lot of it geographically based. Give your answers, remember, honor system:

Answers:

1. Name those cities in which an NFL team plays that are state capitals.

Indianapolis, Atlanta, Denver, Nashville

2A. Name the NFL team by nickname that is first alphabetically. The Buffalo Bills

B. Name the NFL team be nickname that is last alphabetically. The Vikings

(note on the above, I spell out FortyNiners rather than use 49ers...and the 49ers are neither answer)

3. Name all those states in which 2 or more NFL teams play.

New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Florida, Missouri, Texas, California. Florida and Calif. have the most teams with 3 each.

4. Name all those NFL teams that are bird nicknames.

Ravens, Eagles, Cardinals, Falcons, Seahawks

5. Which NFL teams are named after specific persons.

The Cleveland Paul Browns (or the Cleveland Joe The Brown Bomber Louis), and the Buffalo Bill Codys

6. Name those NFL teams that nicknames are cats.

Jaguars, Panthers, Lions, Bengals

7. Name those NFL teams whose nicknames belong to the order of Ungulates.

I am going to have to have my kid, the biologist, explain this one to me. The Ungulates are the Colts, Broncos, and Dolphins.

But neither Bears nor Rams are ungulates. How a Dolphin is more closely related genetically to a horse than a Bear or a Ram mystifies me.

8. Name all those NFL teams that play in the largest city in their state.

Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina(Charlotte) Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota (Minneapolis) Vikings, Detroit Lions, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos.

(notes: Cardinals play in Glendale, not Phoenix. Memphis is larger than Nashville. KC is larger than St. Louis. Columbus is largest in Ohio. LA with no team is largest in CA. No team plays in NYC. Pats don't play in Boston.

9A. What is the smallest town in which an NFL team plays?

East Rutherford NJ, with a population of 8913 people has 2 NFL teams. Also note: Foxboro Mass has 16825 pop. Landover MD has 23,078, Orchard Park NY has 29,054

B. What is the largest town in which an NFL team plays?

Chicago with 2,718,782. Neither NY or LA have teams that play in them.

10. What is the largest city in the USA that does not have an NFL team play within its region?

The East Rutherford teams are in the NYC region, so they don't count. LA does not have a team. #2 on this list is San Antonio TX with a 1.4 million population, but no team. Also note, neighboring Austin with about 800,000 people is also in top 10 cities. That market should probably have its own team.

11. What is the largest NFL city by area?

Jacksonville. Jacksonville is the 5th largest city in the US by area, behind only 4 Alaska cities, Sitka, Juneau, Anchorage, Wrangell.

(oddly, the city I am going to on my fall vacation: Anaconda MT is #6 overall.

FYI, Cleveland is only 133rd in overall size among US cities in area. Columbus, Toledo and Cincinnati are all larger in Ohio.

12. Which color is listed most often in the list of official colors of NFL teams?

It is White, in fact, nearly every single NFL team lists white as one of its official colors. The next color is some form of Blue.

The Browns are the ONLY team that lists brown as an official color. Five teams list Orange as a color (Bears, Broncos, Bengals, Buccaneers).

It was Barron Hilton who chose the name Chargers......and he named them after a credit card. He had an interest in like Diner's Club or something. That is how they got there name.

Just going from the Wiki page - you may want to go and change it if you feel differently:

According to the official site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Barron Hilton agreed after his general manager, Frank Leahy, picked the Chargers name when he purchased an AFL franchise for Los Angeles: “I liked it because they were yelling ‘charge’ and sounding the bugle at Dodgers Stadium and at USC games.”

That may be an additional reason, but there was definitely a tie-in with a credit card company he held an interest in.
