Training Camp Battles (by position group): WR

First off, I can't believe it's almost the 4th of July and we still don't know what's going on with Gordon...

Ohh well, here is my take on the clusterf*** that is our WR corp... cue the "Mission Impossible" theme song...

13 receivers coming to camp; however, I expect this to change significantly as other teams release players, and/or after news about Gordon...

Here is something for you to ponder over during the holiday weekend...

Starting WR1 - Josh Gordon

No competetion... at all... if he's allowed to play

Starting WR / Slot receiver - Andrew Hawkins

I think we will see a whole lot of Hawkins in a "Wes Welker-type" of role. He may lead the team in receiving despite not lining up outside very often. He may end up being our go-to-guy...

Starting WR2 (or WR1 if Gordon is suspended) - Miles Austin vs Nate Burleson vs Travis Benjamin

What a mess... Obviously, being a 2-time pro bowler in the past gives Austin the edge in this competetion, but he HAS to prove he can be healthy. Burleson is a solid WR2 and Benjamin might get a shot at it as well. We may be adding names to this list once camp begins based on the young guys on the roster and how they utilize their reps during camp

WR4 (or WR2 if Gordon is suspended) - 2 losers above vs Charles Johnson vs Anthony Armstrong vs a group of UDFAs (Jones, Gabriel, Snead, Shaw, Krause)

Do you follow? If not, that's okay. It's a little confusing. But, what I'm saying is Charles Johnson and Anthony Armstrong are going to be given opportunities during camp. Johnson still has to get healthy, and until all these guys are healthy, the group of UDFAs we picked up are going to be given some significant reps during camp. Maybe we can find a "gem" out of those guys.

Roster spots - losers of above vs Conner Vernon

No doubt we will keep 5 WRs, so I had to add 2nd-year guy Vernon to one of the lists. BTW - he holds an ACC record as the first player in history with multiple 70+ catch sesons, and holds the record at Duke for career receiving yards... just saying

Eligible for Practice Squad - Chandler Jones, Jonathan Krause, Kenny Shaw, Willie Snead, Taylor Gabriel, Charles Johnson, Conner Vernon

My picks (oh boy):

If Gordon wins appeal and plays:

WR1 - Josh Gordon

WR2 - Miles Austin

WR3/S - Andrew Hawkins

WR4 - Nate Burleson

WR5 - Travis Benjamin

WR6 - Charles Johnson

PS - Willie Snead

PS - Chandler Jones

If Gordon is suspended:

WR1 - Miles Austin

WR2 - Nate Burleson

WR3/S - Andrew Hawkins

WR4 - Travis Benjamin

WR5 - Anthony Armstrong

WR6 - Charles Johnson

PS - Chandler Jones

PS - Willie SNead

Release - Krause, Shaw, Gabriel, Vernon (and Armstrong if Gordon is not suspended)

LOL... that was a mess. Nothing spectacular here, unless we have Gordon. Then, the combination of experience and young talent is impressive; however, any production from our WR group (with or without Gordon) is dependent on Austin, Burleson, Benjamin, and Johnson being healthy... is that a long shot?? Maybe, if not, expect to see a few signings and even a UDFA (like Jones) make the roster...

Switching to D. Defensive line will be up next...

Happy 4th of July!!! Be safe!!

2 suspensions today announced:

Rokevious Watkins (a backup lineman) 4 games for substance abuse policy

Dion Jordan (Miami) 4 games for PED policy

Looks like Gordon may be coming up on the NFL's adgenda pretty soon...

I guess they had to get all the Jimmy Graham TE or WR crap and all the concusion/pain killer law suits out of the way first...

With the NFL firing off suspensions today like shots from a Roman candle, some have wondered whether the next shoe will drop on the throat of Browns receiver Josh Gordon.
Per a league source, nothing will be happening today.
But it will be happening sooner rather than later. Gordon’s hearing, we’re told, has been scheduled for late July.
It’s still possible that a hearing won’t be needed, if the NFL and the NFLPA work out a reduced suspension. Gordon reportedly faces a minimum banishment of one year for his latest violation of the substance-abuse policy.
If Gordon is suspended for a year, the ban will start immediately. It’s possible that, with a reduced suspension, he’ll be permitted to participate in training camp and the preseason.

If Gordon is suspended:

WR1 - Miles Austin / WR2 - Nate Burleson / WR3/S - Andrew Hawkins / WR4 - Travis Benjamin

WR5 - Anthony Armstrong / WR6 - Charles Johnson / PS - Chandler Jones / PS - Willie Snead

Release - Krause, Shaw, Gabriel, Vernon (and Armstrong if Gordon is not suspended)

Happy 4th of July!!! Be safe!!

First, back at ya...

Second, since Josh's sentence is more a question of how long and not if, I'll just skip to part 2.

Basically I just swap Burleson and Hawkins in your line-up. I like Burleson coming off the bench in the 3-WR sets to add his possession game and experience to the mix. It doesn't hurt that this also keeps our "vet" WR rested in case we need him to start later in the year.

As for the rest, I have to reserve judgment on WR5 and down until I see more in pre-season.

When l think of the slot receiver, l think of the guy who is typically not matched up against the other teams top DBs, and who basically tries to find a soft spot in the middle of the field amongst LBs and Safeties to catch the ball and make something happen, and Hawkins eats that shit up.

I'm not totally convinced Benjamin will be ready to go at the start of the season, and with Gordon looking like a lost soul, that means ALL of the wideouts are going to be new to this team. That ain't great news.

The silver lining l hope is that after some trial and error, someone awesome is going to emerge from this bunch, and l wouldn't be at all surprised if it's a lesser known dude. Some of those guys have some impressive credentials, and opportunity is knocking like a battering ram.

I'm pegging Willie Snead to be the guy, mostly 'cause l wanna yell "WILLAY!" at the sports bar when he nails a big play. Some names are just more fun to yell than others.

So Cameron needs to be my homer fantasy football pick basically.

Picking TR, and dropping JG a week before he came off his suspension, last year is still giving me nightmares.

I hate fantasy football.

the kid we picked up from GB, Charles Johnson, has to be worth considering for cheap. 6'2", 215lb, runs a 4.4 40. Hopefully he can run a crossing route and a go route, and we can just get the ball to him.

Andre knows he is nearing the end of his career and he wants a shot at a ring... now!

It's why he wants out of Houston.

It is why he would not report to Cleveland among many other teams.

For what it is worth, Hoyer did a short interview last night before he threw the first pitch at the Indians game, and he mentioned that he has been spending some of his off time throwing to and working on timing with both Hawkins and Charles Johnson. So it sounds like Johnson is likely going to be cleared by the start of training camp and he is going to have at least a bit of chemestry with Hoyer.
