"It would be horribly tragic if my ability to protect myself or my family were to be taken away, but that's exactly what Democrats are determined to do by banning semi-automatic handguns."

We can all appreciate irony, right?

I can't appreciate anyone taking a pulpit to further advance their point regardless of how it may counter the prevailing belief of the members here. Especially so damn soon.

Sorry, Woody... I'll give shit to anyone on this board that takes a mental health tragedy and spins in a political game of one-upsmanship. There are enough people on this board that do it, don't be them.

Fine then. Just Muslims committing crimes it is.

The more guns, the better.

No double standards at all

etc etc etc.

Terrible tragedy. Maybe the mom needed help. If she really did have a mental illness, why was she ever able to get access to guns?

We see dozens of threads on here pushing whatever the far right wing story of the moment is. If I don't post this, we never see it on here. It isn't too early and it is worth an attempt at a discussion.

If you want to ignore it, go for it. We'll just keep shooting each other.

If nutty mom had stabbed them to death in their sleep would that have been preferable? I mean, one of those evil guns wouldn't have been involved. That would be the saving grace.

Exceptions do not make the rules. Situations like this are highly irregular or it wouldn't be sensational enough for the news to cover it.

So if she did have a history of mental illness it is perfectly acceptable for her to have access to guns in the home?

She didn't murder them in their sleep. A family argument erupted and she grabbed a gun and started to shoot as they ran away. If she grabbed a knife we probably wouldn't have three dead.

Did I miss something? Because I don't recall in either story that a history of mental illness was involved.

So hypothetically, no. If she has a history of mental illness than she lied on the background check to get the firearms. An argument can be made that HIPAA laws need to be changed to accommodate for having immediate access to mental health records during a background check.

If the police had charged her with a domestic disturbance charge during one of the many visits they would have legally been able to relieve her of any firearms in the home and it would red flagged during any background checks.

the woman acted completely out of character, at least the character that

loved and cherished her daughters.

Not all people with significant mental health problems... are

officially identified as such.

Going afterr 200 million gun owners to try to stop this rare madness, is stupid.

A cop or two have been found to murder...

Mental health problems that never surfaced violently before, drugs, alcohol, who knows.

Suppose she arsoned her house down and murdered her daughters that way?

Would anybody support banning flammable liquids? Matches? wooden homes? torches?

There is something about the privacy of someone who has been in some

psych ward/officially designated as having a mental disorder....

and having that put on a list of "can't buy guns, etc" list.

http://csgv.org/issues/guns-and-mental-health/

and one more time - there is NO GUN SHOW LOOPHOLE where gun shows don't use

background checks on gun purchases.

All licenses gun dealers are required to send info in to the background check system before any

gun purchase can be approved.

The exception is, there are a few private gun owners, who sell a couple of their guns at those shows, at least

there used to be. I don't believe they have to use the background check system.

I believe private sales should happen outside of gun shows. But, I don't believe in forcing a couple hundred million

people who go through the background check system every time they pass on their guns to their heirs.

That would require a national registration system to track all that - and that is just the system that a gov

needs to take all guns, one way, or another - as in, through the courts or through raising the price of gun

ownership up so high, that no one can afford to keep them anymore. And surely no one believes that the left

hasn't earned the reputation for ulterior motives with their "gun control" agenda. The left isn't denying it anymore.

Sure you're required to transfer through a FFL dealer even for private sales, but I don't know how you could stop people from doing handshake cash deals regardless.

Unless you want to register every gun serial number and owner in a database and make sure it's more like the process of a car title, but you'd never get that by the NRA. And what could you do about the hundreds of millions of guns already in the US - not much.
