Browns Hire Horton For D C

Led the team in Total Tackles, Solo Tackles, Assists, Interceptions and Touchdowns. I thought he played his ass off on a shitty defense.

i guess if we're speaking in relative terms, you have a point. Comparing him though to other just avg LB'ers he can't do what they do almost routinely. He soaks up a lot of tackles on a Shiite defense that doesn't know how to tackle. I'll give him that. He's pawing those tackles from behind the runner almost every time and runners routinely get yards after contact on us, but he gets a tackle. The kind of LB'er performance I want out of a Browns MLB'er is approaching what Kuechly does. The range in coverage and the ability to be in the right gap, that's what I want. Is that asking a whole lot?

Just to add. Dansby had the Browns smack down of the year at Jets Goal line in Game 1. Loss weight may not have mattered on that one!!

When did Dansby ever play at 260#?

according to him that's what he played at Ariz. I know I thought that was high too but this was what Siragusa said on air....that Dansby told him he had to lose 30 lbs which put him at 228. I was thoroughly flummoxed myself on multiple levels. Why so heavy at Ariz, why so light now....wtf is Pettine doing with his 3-4 that Horton doesn't, what is the meaning of life etc, etc. Yeah it just made me scratch my head even harder. It seemed like Pettine was trying to get everyone to drop too much weight.

and what since? he got routinely washed out of point of attack on probably 80% of the running plays against the Browns.

It's called scheme & Team Defense. watch Carolina's 4-3. when your d front can keep people off your LB's they make tackles..

oh I agree, but Kuechly makes his own way to the runner routinely whether someone's trying to block him or not. And Dansby routinely runs up into the wrong gap with no one on him. I don't know anymore if it's scheme or talent, I suspect it's both, I just want him gone..kirk too.

Plueeezzzzzzeee. after watching the Carolina- Seahawks game, there's probably not another 5 MLBs in the NFL that could sniff Kuechly's jockstrap. The guy has unbelievable range & instincts. That pass breakup showed how great he is.

Having a linebacker that great on the roster would help, but for the Browns you'd probably have to go back to Chip Banks to find someone that good. For the short attention spans that want Dansby gone- I think the same things were said about D'Qwell Jackson.

If I want to blame anyone- it's Farmer for gutting the defense, (Sheard, Rubin, Ward) and bringing in oldsters to replace them.

IMHO Luke is the best linebacker to come out since Ray Ray. He's the complete package. So just saying 'find backers like Keuchley'... well, that shit just doesn't come around often.

Only 24 years old too, he's going to be dominating for quite awhile yet.

Haven't watched him yet as I've taken on some new responsibilities and passions this off-season.

However I look forward seeing how deep the rabbit hole goes with this comment.

Yep-enlighten us Tour. Are you saying the Bama D line makes Ragland look better than he is? :D

Yes, this sucks :(

I still have a fedora autographed by TJ Ward (it's all I had at the time)

I also have a TJ autograph. I met him at t Browns Backers banquet (along with Same Rutigliano) The thing that shocked me meeting him in person is for as hard as he hits- he's not that big. If you didn't know he was an NFL player, you'd pass him on the street.

Funny thing is, as good as the Browns have been in the course of history....they have never had a HOF LB play for them.

Bill Willis was listed as a "Middle Guard"....but I think that may have been more of a nose tackle like position.

Clay Matthews has been probably the best.....and apparently the powers that be do not think of him as being a HOF LB...as he is not in....nor gotten very close. Jim Houston may be next. For a short stint, yes, Chip Banks may have been among the best the Browns ever had.

But overall, it has not been a position of strength historically for the Browns. They have done better with DL and DBs.

Maybe not:

The Cleveland Browns have contacted Jim Schwartz about becoming the team's defensive coordinator, a league source told ESPN'S Paul Kuharsky.

However, the Eagles and Jaguars also have contacted Schwartz, and he is considering his options. He would have preferred to work for the Titans, but Dick LeBeau is staying in Tennessee.

The Browns have been in touch with former coordinator Ray Horton in addition to Schwartz. Horton is under contract with Tennessee and said he is discussing an extension with the Titans, but the Titans could let him out of his deal. It appears Schwartz or Horton are in line to be defensive coordinator under new coach Hue Jackson.

The NFL Network reported that Horton would interview with the Browns this week.

Schwartz was coach of the Lions from 2009-2013, and spent 2014 in Buffalo. He replaced Mike Pettine, whom the Browns hired to be their coach. He was a college and pro scout from 1993 to 1995 with the Browns under Bill Belichick.

Hopefully, the Schwartz is with us.

Horton is supposedly both taking an interview with us and negotiating a deal with his current employer.

... and suddenly "Maggie May" plays in Tour's head...

From what I've heard, we really wanted Jim Schwartz, but so did many other teams. Schwartz had a destination in mind (I forget which team), but it doesn't look like he got offered the job he wanted. So now it's anyone's guess, but he has options. It's unknown if he will consider the Cleveland job.

Horton appears excited at the prospect to returning to Cleveland. Hue Jackson is well liked and well respected, so that could be a big part of it. Horton might also feel like he has unfinished business here (like 100 other coaches), and probably wants to come back to right the ship. Horton is NOT my favorite candidate, but he is a guy with a lot of experience. His Tennessee defenses weren't ever very good, but it wasn't like he had a ton of talent either.

Schwartz is appealing to many because I THINK he runs more of a 4-3 style of defense, and many Browns fans and analysts are getting tired of the 3-4 look, which we never got correct. Mostly because we never had the linebackers for it. Anyways, just my thoughts.

Actually this is the most important hurdle in my opinion. If somebody plans to reconstruct the defense who do we have that could easily make the transition?

WSS

From OLB to DE? Off the top of my head, Mingo, Orchard and Armonty were all college DEs. Kruger should have no problem - he's not exactly a pass coverage linebacker as we've seen.

In the middle, Desmond Bryant was a 4-3 DT IIRC in Oakland before coming here. Shelton and Meder? Not sure.

Dansby as the Mike is probably fine, though I don't know enough to be sure.

Robertson, Kirksey as OLBs? Not sure.
