There’s something about British films. Rarely to they meet US standards in the way of FX, dazzling cinematography, audio; in fact just about any category that makes American flicks the big glitzy productions they usually are.
Heck, except for the Royal Shakespeare gang the actors themselves often seem a bit ordinary. Often these films look like they were made in the seventies. Oddly enough this one just happens to take place in ’71, so…
Then again we Yanks often try to dress up a weak plot in millions of dollars worth of car chases and explosions.
THE BANK JOB is a traditional heist flick with one twist; that is it’s based on what’s said to be actual events. Now while many producers give that description a pretty wide berth, some of this may well be true even though some of the documents are admittedly sealed.
I won’t give away any info that would spoil the story but basically it centers on a common group of English mugs who get wrapped up in a matter of high national importance.
There are crooked politicians crooked cops, even crooked crooks. There are double and even triple crosses, extortions, torture, bribes blackmail and plenty of other assorted skullduggeries
One refreshing aspect is that in the modern world of the anti-hero in which well, everybody sucks, here the good guys are clearly more likeable than the bad guys.
It’s my opinion that a good movie has to have somebody to root for, or against.
The American version of this one would be similar to OCEANS 11, not the cool one with Sinatra and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, again not the cool one with Peter Graves.
Still even though the production is blue collar and the actors look like they were chosen from the underground station there are more than enough twists and turns to make THE BANK JOB an above average caper.

Also if you’re taking kids, it seems to be on the mild edge of it’s R rating.

Cool, thanks Steve. Previews make it to be more exciting (as they should). I imagine I'll wait to rent it.
Until I forget & see it on TBS

p.s. Hope you had a damn fine one on Monday.
