Oh I knew better; I really did.
Sometimes I guess you just forget to do what you know is right.
You see it all the time on COPS, some idiot who thinks after drinking 5 forty ouncers of Colt 45 then outrun the police and kick their asses if he does get caught. It’s always a bad idea.
Me? Well I knew full well Keanu Reeves was the star of STREET KINGS. I saw his name on the posters and everything.
I went in anyway.
I was thinking to myself “well he doesn’t have to ruin it. He might not have many lines like in THE MATRIX (well the first one anyway) or SPEED right?
No such luck.
Director David Ayers wrote TRAINING DAY and it wasn’t horrible but there were real actors in that one. So maybe he can direct eh? Nope. This guy managed to get a bad performance out of the usually good Forrest Whitaker while Reaves did nothing to get him out of my stinker file.
Actually while none of the actors sink to Reevian levels none are very believable here.
And the cast looks like it’s been plucked from the Fox TV network.
Jay Mohr, Cedric the Entertainer and HOUSE star Hugh Laurie all work below their usual standards.
What we have is a ham handed morality play about bad cops. Some who catch really bad guys via somewhat unconventional methods, some who go way over the line protecting those cops and some plain old crooks.
Tom (Reeves) is one of the unconventional ones. STREET KINGS opens as he tracks down some Korean gangstas who have kidnapped some fourteen year-old girls, raped filmed and rented them out to perverts for profit. Tom disregards the rulebook and, well, takes care of business.
So now it’s becoming apparent that the squad is covering up his unethical methods. Fine, we never mind rogue cops killing scumbags, but now the story takes a twist. Tom’s estranged ex partner is gunned down and suspicion falls unfairly on him. Even worse it looks like his boss is bending the rules to shield him from a crime he didn’t commit.
From here STREET KINGS stampedes on to an ending so predictable that Stevie Wonder could have seen it coming.
I thought for a while that maybe better actors. Perhaps Sly Stallone and Donald pr Kiefer Sutherland could have pulled it off but the script is pretty bad too.
Luckily it wasn’t dull, but the combination of bad directing script and acting put a couple rounds right to its head.
