As you may know, I’ve always been more a DC comics fan than a Marvel fan.
I repeat this because I loved X MEN the movie but a friend who had been an avid reader of X MEN comics was livid over the wanton changes to the foundation of the story.
I will lose respect if some Philistine director dares to put a wig on Lex Luthor.
It just ain’t right.
So, given my lack of familiarity with the IRON MAN legend I stopped a fellow patron and asked if he was a fan of the comic.
He assured me he was and that the storyline is pretty much intact. Of course it’s been updated to modern day and the evolution of the iron armor had been accelerated for the film, but otherwise sound.
Well, I love the cast right off the bat. Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow are fine actors without the overbearing star power that can easily overpower a role.
Robert Downey Jr. is one of Hollywood’s bittersweet stories. He’s a damn good and charismatic actor who has nearly been destroyed by addiction. I’m glad to see him back at work and I hope he can keep clean.
He’s perfect for the role of Tony Stark, an erratic mechanical genius who abandons the lucrative career of weapon monger for one of super altruist.
IRON MAN, as most super hero flick do, includes the origin of that hero.
Superman landing from Krypton, Batman’s parents gunned down I was aware of but Stark’s transformation was new to me. After demonstrating a new and devastating missile he’s kidnapped by some particularly nasty terrorists who lock him in a cave lab and insist he build one for them. Instead he uses their parts and facilities to make himself a suit of highly powered armor in which he blows up a lot of bad guys as well as a big stockpile of Stark Industry weapons. Right then he decides to never let his inventions become the means of death and destruction again.
Unfortunately this change of heart pisses of not only the generic terrorists but also the greedy buggers in the military industrial complex.
The action scenes are sharp, the film fast paced and the FX are fun to watch.
And the proselytizing? Well it isn’t too overbearing.
It’s one of Marvel’s best.

The only reason I gave it a B+ instead of A- is the new Batman series which I thought was just a wee bit better.
So far.
I kinda grade genres in category.

I love Downey, but not in the way Lisa does. I thought he was absolutely fantastic... and so was the movie. As much fun as I've had at a movie in a long while. My son was literally transfixed.

A for me.
