OK it’s a slow week. The Oscars are well past and it’s way too early for next years contenders. Early spring flicks are usually forgotten by summer.
It’s too soon for the summer blockbusters so we wait.
Anyway I’ve been a big Al Pacino fan since THE GODFATHER, just like every other movie fan in America.
Now is he capable of starring in bad movies? Sure. Does he oft times tend to overact? No doubt. Is he also able to turn in a world-class performance that makes a great movie even greater? Indeed he is.
88 minutes, unfortunately, isn’t one of them.
What we have here is a sloppy cookie cutter action thriller that could have been a fun diversion without the preposterous and clumsy plot.
I can live with preposterous, but clumsy pisses me off.
Pacino is Jack Gramm an FBI forensic psychologist whose expert testimony is often the ticket to death row for many of the worst serial killers.
One in particular, Jon Forster (Neill McDonough) after using up eight years of appeals, mostly accusing Gramm of falsifying evidence, has an appointment with a needle and gurney this very day.
All of a sudden there are more gruesome murders exactly fitting Forster’s MO, and Gramm’s testimony starts to smell like BS. Then to make matters worse Gramm winds up as a suspect in the new killings.
All this frivolity is bound by the title’s hook 88 MINUTES. The phone call that we’ve seen in the trailers is an electronically enhanced voice reminding the doc that he has 88 minutes to live. We’re to believe the messages are from the real serial killer who is still on the loose. It’s hard to guess, as there are plenty of sloppy wild herrings and red geese forced into the action to further muddy things up. Chase them if you like but you’ll be disappointed when the writers pull the ending right out of, uh, thin air.
On top of all that the production looks cheap.
The cinematography is weak, the hip-hop soundtrack annoying, and the actors other than Pacino substandard.
Add that to a bad plot and a worse wig and you have officially annoyed Westside Steve.
