Trust me on this one gang. You will hate this movie as badly as any movie you’ve ever had the displeasure to see.
You will kick yourself in the ass for going in the first place and again for not walking out halfway through.
You will want to fly to Germany find director Michael Haneke and kick the snot out of him.
“Gee Westside Steve” you may ask, “ all this for a bad movie?”
The reason for the anger, gang, is that it isn’t a bad movie. It’s a damn good movie with real actors and a plot that accomplishes exactly what the director intends it to do. And that’s punishing you for spending your seven bucks to see it. This is a film for masochists.
You will never be bored but you will never be comfortable.
Tim Roth, Naomi Watts and little Devon Gearhart, the Farbers, arrive at their upscale lake cottage and find their neighbor acting a bit strangely. A pair of creepy young men he introduces as “friends” Peter and Paul accompanies him. (Brady Corbet and Michael Pitt)
Soon these two turn out to be sociopaths rather than mere creeps and they take the family hostage and torture them with abominable “games” for the duration of the film.
There are some of the usual escape attempts that will fall short of success as in any hostage movie, each one with an increasingly unpleasant end.
Sometimes the creeps break the fourth wall and confront the audience directly, as if to dare you to leave.
But you don’t leave and it’s your own fault.
Should you decide to spurn my advice and go let me warn you of one thing.
There is, near the end of the film a trick that is almost certain to make you jump from your seat and yell bulls***,
Not going to spoil it but let me know if I’m wrong.
I have no doubt you’ll know it as soon as it happens.
My grade?
For being as obnoxious and abrasive as it intends to be, it’s a success.
