Man, as a critic, I hate good movies, I really do. They’re too hard to write about.
Like songwriting the best work always comes from pain.
Happy songs, for the most part, suck out loud.
I wanted so badly to find something to bitch about and waited nearly two hours. Nothing. Zip. Well OK.
Here’s one thing; the Zip reminded me.
This is a film about the earliest days of professional football. It was a time in which the players were laid off shop workers farmers, wrestlers and assorted bums.
They played in cities like Decatur and Racine and Akron Ohio. The script picked on the Akron team three times as the one that folded the week before a game. No idea if it’s factual but don’t pick on the Rubber City.
And that, friends, is my only gripe. Sorry.
George Clooney is Dodge Connelly, an over the hill fast talking player coach of the struggling Decatur team. Without some kind of hook, some magic, the team and the league itself is headed down the drain. John Krasinski is Carter Rutherford, a war hero football star at Princeton University, a big fan favorite with a secret. He seems to be the perfect key to success for the floundering pro team. Renee Zellweger is Lexie Littleton, a hotshot reporter with a sharp tongue and an assignment to weasel out that secret out by any means necessary. The underrated Jonathan Pryce is C.C. Frazier, the evil and greedy manager who’s at the bottom of whatever conflict arises.
That’s all the plot I’m giving, but I will say this isn’t a cookie cutter sports flick featuring the underdog v the arrogant champ. It’s a love story a comedy and a lesson on morality all seasoned with great acting and a good old all-American ending.
Clooney and Zellweger light up the screen together and their dialogues is as crisp as any from the golden age of American filmdom. He’s a real life old-fashioned movie star and she’s cute as a bug’s ear and sharp as a tack. As for Krasinski, he plays the honest young hero perfectly; never arrogant or smarmy.
The best comedy in years; I loved every minute of it.

Huh.

This is the first glowing review I've read. Everything else has involved dumb humor - insults to the intelligence type stuff - and Zellweger way over acting.

I like Krasinski tons so I'll check it out.

If it sucks, you so owe me money.

Well I try not to see any other reviews before I do my take.
I thought she cought that period just right.

Too bad I don't get advance screens or I might catch a blurb.

clap

How do you compartmentalize, Steve? George F'ing Clooney?????

PS I read the book and would like to see the movie (Into The Woods), but just can't get beyond the 'Sean Penn' part.

I love Clooney. And Streisand and Alec Baldwin and Kevin Spacey and think Penn's well above average.

The stupid ass politics they spout?
Well I just don't think about 'em.
Chuck Norris sucks, but he seems likle a good guy.

So I saw it and wasn't thrilled.
It was ok, had some really funny parts, but it left me a little empty when I compare it to O Brother Where Art Though?.

They filmed a lot of Leatherheads here in Winston-Salem, NC. I know several people who were extras...news reporters, etc. Many of the interiors were shot at our former main post office building, now called the Millennium Center. George Clooney was very accessible while in town to direct and star in the film. He often ate lunch at a local Japanese/Sushi place called Ichiban.
