Last year our DL was probably pretty well ensconced in the bottom 10 (maybe even the bottom 3-4) in the league. This year, Scouts.Inc has them ranked at #13!!!

quote:
13. Cleveland Browns
The Browns spent a lot of money to revamp what was one of the worst defensive lines in the NFL in 2007, adding inconsistent NT Shaun Rogers and a relatively unproven DE Corey Williams. Rogers has the size, bulk and athleticism to dominate the middle but has performed at a consistently high level only when he is up for a new contract, so it remains to be seen how he will play after getting a huge new deal from Cleveland. Rogers can tie up two or three blockers at a time and can use his quickness and agility to shoot gaps and cause havoc in the backfield. Williams, meanwhile, had two successful years with Green Bay and brings a good combination of size, quickness and agility to the unit. He can use power or athleticism to disrupt things in the backfield or play a strong two-gap role. His issues have been inconsistency and an inability to stay healthy for an entire season. Robaire Smith will hold down the other end spot, and he is a solid veteran who came over in 2007 after disappointing seasons in Houston and Tennessee.

The Browns have moved ahead of defensive teams like Indianapolis, Houston and Chicago.

Baltimore is at #4, Pittsburgh at #7, and Cincinnati is #24.

They could be top 5 judging by how excited RAC looks when he talks about his new guys.

How the D-line plays is the question of the season.

If they stay reasonably healthy, they should crack top ten.

However, the stats could be misleading, since I expect the offense to light it up, which means other teams will have plenty of opportunities to score also.

my guess would be the d line plays like the o line last year, which was shaky at first, and then gelling into one of the best lines in the league.

This will turn our linebackers and secondary into gold if we can get a consistent pass rush and blow up running plays in the backfield.

I'm very excited to see how this season unfolds for us.

For once we have enough starting caliber DLmen that we can groom young guys like Rubbin and the like behind them. We've been so used to either playing older guys or having to throw young into the fire. The 3-4 DL takes time to learn (especially at the pro level).

Sure we've been excited about prospects like Baba but we just didn't have time to let them develope. Rubbin and company should have the time and talent to learn from...we've got to start and build our own DL like other good 3-4 Defenses do.

Probably a good starting point.

A person would be hard pressed to rank them higher never having played together.

While there is a chance the line won't pan out that good, there is a chance it can end up 4-5 slots better than that.

Maybe even better than that.

Rogers, Williams, and Robaire Smith might make quite a trio, especially when you add in S Smith who can spell all
of them, helping to keep the fresh.

The lakefront could be an exciting place this fall.

Stupid ass statement, per usual.

I realize you like to piss on these rankings, but they exist as a conversation starter/one person's opinion, not anything official. I take them for what they are. Treat it as official and you'll end up sounding as stupid as, well, one of your posts.

If we end up with a D-Line that ranks in the top half of the league, we'll be in very decent shape. I do think we have reason to be excited here.

I have seen him use that comment a few other places. I was beginning to wonder if Rain Man had joined the board.

Actually I think he thinks he is being cute because I entitled a thread with "It's Official..." and it was about the rankings (not just one) that I had seen regarding our OL. Of course he has never brought anything of substance to this board anyway so I never responded, but he has now OFFICIALLY become a troll.

Anything of substance???? You bring off-season rankings of sports writers to the board! That's substance?

Those that are accepted on this board are those who despite actual win-loss records, and actually playing football games, proclaim success. If you don't, your considered not a fan.

Substance? right....

You might want to check out my latest post over on the 'AFC North Could Produce Sub .500 Champion' thread. You know, where I pointed out that the 'phenominal' NFC East division basically didn't do jack $hit outside of their own division against good opponants. THAT is what I am referring to substance. The rest, like these rankings, is just FYI and commentary.

Oh, so your "It's Official" remark was just sarcasm.

I misunderstood.

But let me fit in with this board...

Browns signed more high priced free agents than anyone else, so the best

Anderson might be the best QB, unless Quinn starts, then he is the best.

Cowboys, Patriots, Steelers, etc, all stink no matter their record.

Substance = What I want to happen.... Now I get it.

Yes, and we're all fanboys with no objectivity.

See that was sarcasm.

Now you fit in with the MORONS around here.

13 is a HUGE leap.. so on paper.. if they can play 13th on the field..we are a playoff defense. They cannot rank us any higher than that due to the major SUCKS factor of our defense against the run and giving up scores last year. Also we are not even certain where these guys line up exactly yet (they want rogers to play some end after he learns the tackle spot). They have not played together yet either so until they do it on the field..that is pretty good

This is great news. A strong D line will make the linebackers and backfield look much better, and the whole team look better.

Things are lookin' up!

I think I am more excited about the D this season than anything else. This doesn't mean I think we are 100% sorted in this area but I hope and pray for a quick gelling together of those big guys and making some big plays in the early games.

An ideal scenario is putting pressure on Romo from snap 1 of the season. If we could do that in game 1, get up a good sack rate, force some picks, we will cause much confidence denting in the remaining OLines our D will face. I guess we will get a view at Training camp and pre-season. Bring it on.
