I love how Troy doesn't even know his competition's name. "...John Flacco, that is his name right?" What a joke. Watching the Baltimore QB competition should be interesting this preseason. They might even learn each other's names before the season starts. I'd rather have DA and BQ than the three dudes the Ravens have any day. If Flacco sees the field this year I'd be shocked. I don't see how a shotgun quarterback coming from a I-AA school can make a significant impact in his first year of the NFL. Does anyone know if there is a precedent for this? I can't think of one.

My money is on Troy, but since I am an Ohio State homer that doesn't count.

Troy may or may not be a starter, but he is a great backup in this league. I trust Jimmy T.

See that sly look when he said John Flacco?
He was messing with the press, bet it was his way of saying he's not worried in a joking matter.

At least Troy's Myth will always have that Heisman that ESPN worked so hard for for him, "you know what I mean?"

OL/RB no.

Troy Smith qb Ravens
Antonio Pittman rb Saints
Ted Ginn Jr wr Dolphins hahahahahahhaha
Anthony Gonzalez wr Colts
Doug Datish c Falcons

Guess that's a far cry from "all of them" huh?

Kirk Barton ot (part of that team) went in 2008 to the Bears, so I'm guessing you were right, slim pickings on that line.

Thanks, DD. Kiss rocks - Mao doesn't. I thought the picture was pretty funny too.

Back to my question, though. The only Division I-AA QB that I can think of that has been successful in the NFL is Steve McNair. I saw him play in person when Alcorn St. played Youngstown State in the I-AA playoffs back in '92 or '93 (I can't remember which). He mostly played from the shotgun, but also got under center once in a while. I just remember McNair standing out on the field like a man among boys. The only reason YSU was able to beat him was because of Coach Tressel and YSU had a more talented team. In contrast, I hadn't even heard of Flacco until the pre-draft reports started coming out. Did he stand out on that level like McNair did? I never saw him play at all this year.

BTW, after McNair was drafted by the Oilers/Titans did he play his first season or sit a while? I seem to recall he played quite a bit his rookie year.

Nevermind. I looked up his stats. He was drafted in '95 so I guess I watched him in the '94 I-AA playoffs. As a rookie McNair played in 4 games with 2 starts, threw 80 passes with 41 completions for 569 years, 3 TDs and 1 INT. In his second season he played in 9 games with 4 starts, threw 143 passes with 88 completions, for 1197 yards, with 6 TDs and 4 INTs. I think it is safe to say that Flacco won't see the field much this year. If he ends up starting at all I would be surprised with Boller and Smith ahead of him at this point. I would think that the Ravens would let Smith play some before Flacco to see what he can do.

As a Browns fan I like Baltimore's QB situation. I looks like we will be ahead of them in that department for the foreseeable future. Plus, we have a better line to protect our QBs than the Ravens. I smell another season sweep of the purple rats.

I went back and watched it. I only saw a "sly look" on Troy's face after he called him John Flacco and the reporters mouth likely dropped after he heard Troy mess up the 1st round draft pick's name.

No. Looked like a blatant mistake to me, but can you blame him? He is focused on winning the job himself. Smith doesn't seem as laid back as Boller is about the whole thing. Boller is as good as gone and he knows it. Smith, however, thinks he is the next heir to the Ratbird throne.

It really blew my mind last season when the Ravens weren't playing for anything the last 3 or 4 weeks and they didn't even give Smith a chance...the one game they brought him in during the 4th against I believe Colts, he nearly brought them back to a victory before being picked near the end zone at the end of the game(bear in mind he did lead them to a scoring drive right before that w/only minutes remaining and then proceeded to drive the length of the field to put his team in a position to win). Just don't have a clue why they are so hell bent on giving Boller the nod over him...you don't need to have prototypical QB body to be effective in today's NFL.
