Ex-Pats employee Walsh sends NFL video of Pats' taping

ESPN.com news services

Updated: May 8, 2008, 1:15 AM ET

After brokering a deal to protect himself, former New England Patriots employee Matt Walsh has finally turned over his evidence in the videotaping controversy.

The New York Times reported and the NFL confirmed on Wednesday that Walsh sent eight tapes to the league that show the Patriots recording the play-calling signals of five opponents in six games between 2000 and 2002.

Taping the signals of opposing teams is prohibited by league rules, and the Patriots were already fined $750,000 and docked a first-round draft choice in September for taping the New York Jets. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell left open the possibility that more penalties could be levied.

A Patriots employee from 1997-2003, Walsh reached an agreement to turn over the tapes in exchange for being indemnified from all future legal fees.

The New York Times obtained a list of the Walsh tapes, and the league confirmed that list, which says that the Patriots taped offensive and defensive coaches in regular-season games against the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers. The team also made video of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2002 AFC Championship Game.

Walsh's tapes do not include the video of the St. Louis Rams' walkthrough before the 2002 Super Bowl, as reported by the Boston Herald.

"Mr. Walsh has never claimed to have a tape of the walk-through," said Walsh's lawyer Michael Levy, according to the Times. "Mr. Walsh has never been the source of any of the media speculation about such a tape. Mr. Walsh was not the source for the Feb. 2 Boston Herald article."

Walsh has separate meetings scheduled on Tuesday with the commissioner and Senator Arlen Specter in which he is expected to provide additional details about the taping process.

Under his agreement with the league, Walsh can retain copies of his videotapes, but he cannot use them without the consent of the NFL.

Besides suspending BB what else can the NFL do?
He and the team were already fined and sanctioned.

It's a non-story. Belichick admitted that he taped signals in the past, the Pats were punished, and now we learned that...the Pats taped signals in the past. The situation is done.

So, they forfeit those wins last year, then we have one more win and we have to replay last years playoffs which we are now in right?

Sweet.

The difference is, they taped both defense AND OFFENSIVE signals.

Which they denied doing before.

However, it won't go anywhere. The league wants it over, because if it blows up anymore, it will turn into HUNDREDS of lawsuits.

I have even read about people having direcTV talking about suing because they paid for something that ended up being fraudulent.

I don't think the NFL wants that type of lawsuit, regardless of where it goes, so this issue is over for them.

Yeah, I guess we should just be more like other countries and settle our disputes by becomming terrorists, right? BTW, if you have problems with Americans, you're in the wrong place if you expect people to support your view.

Cheating by stealing signs? I mean come on, how much of an advantage are we talking here. With all the film watching and gameplanning, I am guessing one or two plays a game tops.

Cheating? Hell yeah. Does it need another round of examination from the Commish? Sure.

But I highly doubt there is new info from "My name is Walsh and I want to write a book, but what I turned in is old news."

My bet is BB and NE were forthcoming with what they did and that is why the $750K + 1st Round pick penalty handed down.

Nothing new here. Cheated. Dealt with. Done.

Yeah, if you want to bash Americans, go to the Politics board, where you can bash away according to your own particular partisan kink.

On this issue, I'm all for bashing. If you're honestly thinking about suing the NFL because one team stole signals, which might have given them a marginal advantage on certain plays, you deserve all of the bashing you will no doubt receive for being either an idiot or hopelessly greedy, or both.

The NFL is probably hoping that no other team is named. I'm sure BB and NE is not the only team that tapes.

funny sweet....dont cry too much or your tears will melt your soapbox.

perhaps we could be like other countries and not tie up the courts with meaningless bullshit....ya know, like when your hot coffee burns you because youre an idiot, or when you watch a game that was possibly fixed....like thats the broadcasters fault.

sorry, but americans are lazy, and always looking for a way to make an easy buck, or sue for it. really, who wants to work for their money when you can get millions for being stupid?

i love my country....doesn't mean it doesn't have faults.

I agree w/ Choco.

#1 Isn't it pretty hypocritical to say if you don't like a particular trait of this country then leave? Thats the most UNAMERICAN THING anybody can say. This country was built on the opportunity to change, why would you assume you can deny somebody hat opportunity by telling them to leave? Real American.

#2 frivolous law suites are ridiculous. Some people in this country will go to court 4, 5, 6 times a year w/ frivolous cases just trying to make a buck off somebody else. How many people do we know trying to cheat the disability system?

#3 So what... a few NFL games might of had, or not had, their out comes change because of some signals stolen that anybody w/ film would of seen anways. Has that personally harmed you? Is the fact that you pay for cable TV already, and your football team plays on a certain channel that may of been cheated, really affected your life that much? If football really runs your life that much, and you don't make 3 million a year working for the NFL in some form, you need professional help.
