THREE PRIORITIES

1. Get even more from the QB spot.
The Browns have committed to Derek Anderson over Brady Quinn -- for now. Now they need to be right. The team has a shot at the playoffs if Anderson simply plays at his 2007 level but no serious postseason hopes if he doesn't improve. Anderson needs to work on raising his completion percentage, throwing fewer interceptions and better preparing himself mentally for big games.

2. Identify (and follow) the leaders.
In Romeo Crennel's fourth year as coach, it's time to address leadership issues. Anderson can't be the man on offense because everyone knows Quinn might be No. 1 next year -- if not sooner. RB Jamal Lewis has the needed temperament, but there's concern as to how he'll react if his carries are reduced. On defense, ILB Andra Davis has the makeup to be a leader -- if he can elevate his play.

3. Make the retooled defense work.
New coordinator Mel Tucker has created an early buzz. Now Tucker must prove his plan to simplify Crennel's defensive playbook can work against complex game plans.

PURE CAMP
with OT Kevin Shaffer

Best prank: You see guys bring the cart in and throw on a rookie DB and take him straight to the cold pool. They take two guys, tie 'em together and throw 'em in. They might try to resist, but it doesn't help them.

Hardest worker: Antwan Peek. He's just going 100 mph, whether it's full pads, half pads, helmets and shorts. He plays at one tempo.

Unique off-field activity: I like going to a local bowling alley as a team. It's so much fun in the middle of camp. The linemen like to think we're pretty good. No spin or anything. Pound the ball as hard as you can.

Don't turn your back on ... Hank Fraley and me. We're guys who always try to hit stuff out of your hands. If it's a water or a notebook, you better be holding on. It falls everywhere and flies everywhere.

Hmmmm...does that first blurb about the QB's sound vaguely familiar???

As for the leaders...JL sounds good to me on the offense. He has an amazing work ethic and has not only been to the playoffs, but WON there. On defense...the entire D is soooo new/young. I kinda believe Shaun Smith, if he can grab a starting slot, may be the leader. AD needs to step up BIG if he is going to take that role.

Because the defensive players are so new/young, I think that the simplified tact is going to be a positive change. Allow them to KNOW what they are doing and ATTACK!!!

Love to hear about Peek being a 100 mph player. That is going to have an effect on ALL the LB's, and Orr/Wimbley in particular. Should prove to make the LB's better all the way around.

I love this.... I didn't think he was that bad last year!

I can't rip off Lane Adkins EXCELLENT article, but he was allowed to watch a ton of practice tape with Browns coaches. A few highlights: McGinest is in great shape and will "start" on run downs. He's the quarterback of the defense. Peek is a beat off the edge and could be the breakout player. Williams and Rogers are doing great and fitting right in. The surprise of the camps was Shantee Orr, who is a serious player.

Beau Bell was a little stiff and not super quick. Some reservations. Hope is that with pads on, he shows his stuff.

Peek and Wimbley looked to be one badass tandem till peek got hurt and played the rest of the season at less than 100%.

Defense will be a major strong point of this team in 08-09.

This D will surprise a lot of people if injuries don't ravage them.

I'm so confident that the Browns D will turn it around (and I was so desperate for defense/ST in my draft), that I am starting the Browns Defense, which is owned in 3% of all leagues.
