I think the writers are underestimating the overall impact of a top half ranked DL is going to have on the play of our LB's.

18. Cleveland Browns
As a whole, Cleveland's linebackers should benefit a great deal from the Browns' off season aggression in acquiring quality defensive linemen to control the line of scrimmage. The Browns should also have Antwan Peek, a quick-twitch edge rusher, healthy to spell and complement Willie McGinest at the left outside position. McGinest isn't the player he once was and obviously has lost a step, but he is tough to run on over the tight end and is an experienced leader in the locker room. On the right side, Cleveland has a dangerous player in Kamerion Wimbley. His production fell off in his second season, but he also demanded an awful lot of attention from opposing protection schemes. He should rebound well, but does need to add to his repertoire of pass-rush moves and become stouter against the run. Inside, the Browns have some promising young players and another veteran team leader in Andra Davis. He is undersized for the 3-4 and his play dropped off last year, but he is tough and has above-average instincts. His playing time probably will diminish this year, and he will not be a factor on throwing downs. ILB D'Qwell Jackson is an up-and-comer. He could explode this year with a talented defensive line in front of him, but he also must do a better job of creating big plays. Leon Williams is another good-looking young player who is going to be difficult to keep off the field, and the Browns also drafted Beau Bell with their first draft pick to add another physical presence at inside linebacker.

They talk about Peek but fail to mention Orr...another pass rushing OLB who is actually better than Peek vs. the run. They also didn't mention that Peek had been hurt all last year with a foot injury.

On the inside, they mention Davis is undersized...but that is exactly WHY he is going to be able to improve behind this DL. He has reportedly lost the wait he put on (due to having a poor DL) which will improve his speed. Our ILB crew is going to be a 'fly to the ball' type as the DL should afford them the freedom of not having to shed OL on every play.

Other rankings in our division:
Baltimore 9
Pittsburgh 12
Cincinnati 24

Where are these rankings coming from again? Can't remember.

Peek and Orr are definitely going to slide under the radar nationally, and I can picture Willie barely playing but serving more as insurance in an advisory capacity. Not sure how Davis is undersized being between 240 and 250.

I agree. We were ranked #6 last year in ESPN's LB rankings. That ranking was probably too high - they failed to take into account our terrible d-line.

Now the d-line is vastly improved, and we drop to the middle of the pack?

True, Andra Davis & Willie McGinest are both a year older. And Leon Williams hasn't emerged like many of us hoped he would.

But adding Orr and Bell certainly improves the overall talent of our linebacker core. And Wimbley's new pass rush moves should yield better results...especially when the guy rushing next to him is Shaun Rogers.

I predict that our linebackers again will be ranked in the top ten next year.

I don't worry too much about rankings.....just the opinion of some writer.

I don't view this ranking any better or worse then if he said we had the best LB corp in the league.

It's basically a middle ranking. Not to bad, not near the best....and that I agree with...

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

It's a generous ranking. Considering our past performance and our personnel, i'd be pleased with an improvement up to this level (and hopefully we could build from there).
