I'm getting more and more convinced.

John Taylor at OBR mentioned that the two have talked off and on, most recently earlier this month. I read something very similar from Grossi on "Ask Tony."

Eventually Law will buckle and the Browns will throw in some incentives. Just a gut, a matter of need meets need.

I'll start with the good - back in the day he was as good as it gets. LOVE the experience he'd bring. We need depth so it could be a good move.

My CONCERN would be his age and whether or not he's lost a step or 2 or 3. I think he came into the league about the same time Willie McGinest did. Law's style used to be alot of hands-on the receiver downfield and they've changed the rules quite a bit since then BECAUSE of Ty Law's post season grab-fest on Marvin Harrison. Shortly thereafter, Law found a new employer.

My short term memory sucks so please correct me if I'm wrong. Wasn't Law already a veteran when NE made the 96-97 Superbowl? His agent is going to demand a bigtime salary so let's hope he's as fit as the receivers he'd face. If not, the beatwriters are going to be reminding us of Raymond Clayborne signing for a better salary than we were paying Clay Matthews. There appears to be a league-wide reluctance with Law at this point and I'm guessing age and price tag are the biggest reasons.

Can you tell the side of me that worries alot has seen us burned by BIG names before? Ball & Jurkovich & Irv Smith & Jimmy Pyne & Washington & Andruzzi & Stewart & Roy Barker (fresh off a 12 sack season) showed up and gave us goose eggs across the board. I haven't even mentioned the guys that got injured after BIG signings or contract extensions like Bentley, Baxter, Roye and McCutcheon. McGinest plays a couple times a month. We're just STARTING to change our luck with free agents like Steinbach, Lewis, Shaffer, Smith & Smith. It's because we're LEARNING from our mistakes hopefully.

If we sign Law, I'd like to hear he just aced a bettery of fitness evaluations and he's in perfect condition to face ambitious 22-29 year old receivers. If we're thinking nickel/dime package corner - that might be ideal for him at this point in his career. I'm hot and cold with this idea Shep so I welcome powers of persuasion either way from you or others.

This will be his 13th season.

The deal with corners is speed. If he hasn't lost the dreaded step many do at this juncture, there is no reason why he can't be a viable addition to the team.

I think the Browns are happy with Wright and McDonald as the starters, but Law would bring insurance, be it him starting and one of the others backing up, or him simply being the 3rd corner.

Darryl Green played a long time.

At this point in his career he isn't going to be a great run support guy....don't know if he ever was....maybe why he might still have his speed.

The bottom line is the legs. If he can still run, he can still play.

Law IS a good run support guy and a ballhawk. He doesn't have the speed to be a #1 corner, but he's crafty and smart and takes care of himself. He'd compete to start, for sure... but probably ends up as depth.

It's not all speed. It is to be elite, but not to do your job as a reliable backup and nickel or dime guy.

No, it isn't all speed, but that and quickness are real important for the position no matter what scheme we play.

And I guess to me more accurate....losing a step really means losing 3-4....all people lose a step as the enter their 13th season.

Like I said, if we think he can compete and complement, go for it.

I am a greedy bastid when it comes to my team and good players.

I want them all. Wink

I would like this signing a great deal. I do not see a downside to signing Law to be a nickel/dime CB. Can step in if needed, even at this old age, and, along w/ Cousin can certainly tutor our 2 second-year guys.

Darrel Green could STILL start for many teams. He still runs 4.3's.

I think Law and Cousin in support of Wright and McDonald becmes a very nice balance. Mil'Von James has to beat out A.J. Davis and the other guy, Jenkins.

Brings up the only way they DON'T sign a vet -- I know they like both James and Davis quite a bit.

This is a couple of weeks old, but it has some nice commentary on the situation:

Ty Law Is in No Rush to Make a Decision on His Future
Posted Jun 30th 2008 9:14AM by Ryan Wilson

Last week, FOXSports.com's Adam Schein suggested Ty Law and the Browns would be a nice fit; a grizzled veteran on the downside of a great career but still crafty enough to play at a high level, and a team in dire need of some depth in the secondary after trading Leigh Bodden and losing his backup, Daven Holly, for the year to a knee injury.

In the yesterday's Boston Globe, Mike Reiss agrees: "the Browns would ... be the perfect landing spot ... but general manager Phil Savage has said the Browns don't have much room in their budget." Of course, that's what front-office types say when a) they're not interested, or b) it's early in the negotiations and you don't want to seem overeager; I'd imagine Cleveland could find some salary-cap room under the right circumstances.

Law has also met with the Jets and spoken to Bill Belichick, yet he waits.
"I have contract offers on the table and could have signed a deal early in free agency," said Law, who after requesting his release from the Chiefs following his second season in Kansas City remains an unrestricted free agent. "There is no rush for me at this point. I'm just going to wait for the right situation and the best fit for both me and the team."
Reiss thinks the whispers around the league that the 34-year-old is over the hill has motivated Law to (finally?) get in shape. Plus, waiting for the right opportunity has its advantages: no minicamps, OTAs, and if things really fall into place, only limited training camp practices.

Whatever -- and whenever it -- happens, Law will be in the NFL this season. The Browns seem like the obvious choice, but the Patriots lost Asante Samuel to the Eagles and have some issues in defensive backfield. Law's not the player he was when he left New England after the 2004 season in his little scooter, but he's still better than half the cornerbacks in the league, which is why he'll have a job come September.

they really seem to think the Browns are the eventual 'best fit', and the fact that he has already talked with both the Jets and Patriots and is still out there makes you wonder if he is looking for a team like the Browns to finish in. He could be looking for a team where he might be seen as the final piece to take them over the top...

Law had 13 pass deflections last year and in 05 he led the league in INTs with 10. He still has value but I wouldnt put him on a island. NYGs cb Sam Madison is the same age and he was a starter on a superbowl winning team last season so he is capable of still being productive.

The more I think about it Law seems like a good #2 cb because hes more physical and has experience. Even if he doesnt pan out he would still be one of the best #3 cbs in the league. I dont think hed be a good fit for the slot so Wright or McDoanld would have to cover that and he would move to the 2nd cb position.

The main thing is he is a rental player and I wouldnt give him anymore then 2-3 mil 1 year deal.

Law will be fine aslong as we play zones with him, his lost speed will only show in man to man.

I would love it if Law became a Brown...especially if we play the Colts in the playoffs. He owns Peyton Manning.

I see us going after Youboty, not Law. My friend who is a Big Bills fan says he keeps hearing they are gonna cut him if they cant get anything for him.

I think we brought in Cousins to be the slot, whether that is 2,3, or 4 he will cover the slot. Then you have Three capable players battling for the 2nd starting spot and the dime.

I think law is and will stay to overpriced for the PS Annual Budget. I remember him saying a while back in an interview that there is the salary cap and below that is where there Budget is. That is why we are perennially under the cap like 30 mil.

That's entirely false, BTW. Cap numbers come out all the time. The Browns "budget" is based on their desire to extend Jones, Winslow, and Edwards... and then they have very little left.

we are saying the same thing just wording it deferent. That is what is considered into the spending every year.

Resigning/Extending
Signing Draft Picks
How much to spend on FA

all the while keeping themselves quit a bit under the cap. Seems like at least the last two years that I remember during FA we were in like the top 5-10 with cap room.

When you start a post with: "will be" have some facts.. or something concrete...this is about as good as your guarantee that quinn would be picked in the top 3 last year... "will be" is not the right term to use next time try: hoping, speculating, praying for, maybe, possibly.. but not "will be".. peace..
