Former Steelers DE Dwight White dead at 58
26 minutes ago

Buzz Up PrintPITTSBURGH (AP)—Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Dwight White, part of the Steel Curtain defense that led the team to four Super Bowl championships in the 1970s, has died following surgery at a Pittsburgh hospital. He was 58.

The team announced White’s death Friday.

Team president Art Rooney II is calling White “an important member of the Steelers family.”

Chairman Dan Rooney praised White’s “relentlessness” on the field and his caring nature off it. Rooney notes White scored the team’s first ever Super Bowl points in Super Bowl IX with a safety against Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton.

Before you go acting like an ass...

I suggest you get your facts straight.

He died from BLOOD CLOTS as complications from BACK SURGERY. He was on life support because his liver shut down on account of the clots.

Too assume and claim steroids based on a sad turn of events is despicable.

Please. Show some class when it comes to a person dying.

Sounds like Steroids wrecked that poor bastard's body.

At least he wasn't crushed by a tree.

Is it true that the Steelers are celebrating the 35th anniversery of their first SB win at shadyside cemetery next year?

Average life span of american male: 75.2 years.
Average life span of Steroid-soaked Steelers of 70's and 80's: 43.5 years
Average time it takes someone to fall asleep during one of Preacher's Sunday sermons: 1.4 minutes.

LOL about HB...

but DieHard made an observation that is true. I have no problem with that as it was just an observation without assumption.

However, to assume as HB did... well that just shows crassness and a lack of class...

every fan base has those fans... the ones everyone else just puts up with.

Pretty classless. I would say the same thing if it could be confirmed that he actually died with a syringe half full of steroids in his arm.

It doesn't really matter what he died of or what may have caused it.

RIP Dwight.....I pray he is in God's hands and God grants peace and healing to his surviving family.

To get back to dwight white though... to be honest I didnt know much about him or the steel curtain because im younger but after reading the article Listercat posted in "Another Steeler Dies Young" : Article , he sounded like a hell of a player. Not to be disrespectful but I can see why a guy like himself would die young because he gave 100% of what he had to the game. The whole story of him being sick in the hospital and climbing out of the hospital bed to play in the Super Bowl and having an awesome game. Just shows you how he gave it all. The article doesnt mention anything about steriods too by the way. Just thought it was interesting on how a lot of elite players from back then are dieing young, do you think it has to do with them selling out their bodies while they played? Either way white definitely gave his all, no matter what the condition and shouldnt be accused of using steriods when his real gift was what he had on the inside that kept him going and attacking Offenses.

It could've been any number of things. Maybe steroids (who knows or cares tbh) but you really can't expect people to live as long when they push their bodies to be as big and strong as they are. The number of players that played over 300 pounds that are dying before 50 is pretty high. I think White only played at 255 though, but from what I've read, this guy's death has nothing to do w/ roids.

guys it's a life.

you might be taking football a little to seriously if you slander someone who recently died just because he was on a different team.

The initial reaction of Horse Nuts is actually very common of people, whether he was kidding or not. This is part of the overall "quick to condemn steroids" philosophy incorporated by society. There needn't be any proof whatsoever to automatically blame steroids as the primary cause of someone's death, although everyday people die in their 50's for all sorts of reasons.

That being said, White may very well have been a steroid abuser since it's documented that a ton of ex Steelers did pop Dbol like candy. As I have stated time and again on this board, back then steroids were taken recklessly and foolishly because the science of using the stuff correctly was primitive and administered piss poorly. I don't want to regurgitate all this stuff again, but suffice to say that White very well could have abused steroids and they may or may not have had a link to his direct cause of death.

As far as players dying younger than the average male, this could very well correlate to playing a game as violent as football. However, I think a lot of it has to do with men going from extremely good physical condition to a vegetative life style when they're done. There are theories out there that guys who yo yo up and down like boxers at getting in shape really take a toll on their bodies, especially in the long run. The extremes of training camp in heat and the season as a whole is pretty crazy stuff to do every year, and back then guys didn't do a helluva lot to stay in shape in the offseason. Basically, camp was time to get in shape whereas now it's a year round thing.

You see this kind of thing often in the construction fields. Guys tend to die in their 50's not too long after retirement, it happens a lot. Football is a violent game played at that level, and these guys played when it was much more violent than what it is now. There was passion and hatred back then, whereas now it's mostly a profession to those who play it. Most guys aren't out to intentionally hurt anyone nowadays, but don't think for a second that Dieken or Deleone wouldn't try to kick White, Ernie Holmes, Greenwood or Mean Joe in the kidneys if they thought they could get away with it.

I deplore the Steelers with a passion and that hate goes back to the 70's when I was a boy. I was in the bleachers when Turkey Joe slammed Bradshaw on his head but Christ, it's just a game. Just because someone played for the enemy doesn't mean he's not a fellow human. Anytime someone loses a life, especially before his time, it's a sad event.

Funny you should mention that type of play. I remember back in the early 70's in Cleveland Municipal Stadium when Mean Joe Greene kicked OT Bob McKay in the stomach as he was lying on the ground after a play. Coincidently, not 1 ref saw it, so no flag. (but as flagrant as it was, nobody has ever understood how no ref saw it) That one play was what escalated an already intense rivalry to all out war. This was many years before Turkey Joe planted Bradshaw. The Steelers became known for physical and dirty tactics in the trenches and gadjet plays that, for whatever reason, always seemed to work. (often turning apparent victory into defeat for us)
