The Browns have made another move to bolster their offensive line by signing Seth McKinney to a one-year deal.

McKinney signed with the Browns as a free agent last spring and started the first eight games at right guard before suffering a left shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery.

"Seth started eight games for us last year and with his versatility as a guard and center, this signing should solidify the interior part of our offensive line," Browns general manager Phil Savage said. "At this point, we feel we have seven starters competing for five positions."

A six-year veteran, McKinney has experience at guard and center. If he doesn't win back the starting right guard's job, he could serve as the primary backup at both guard and center.

He'll have plenty of competition at both spots. Ryan Tucker replaced him at right guard last season after playing the previous five seasons at right tackle. The Browns previously re-signed Lennie Friedman, another guard/center combo player, and added Rex Hadnot via free agency, another veteran with experience at both spots.

The team is also hopeful LeCharles Bentley will be healthy enough to compete for a roster spot and playing time this spring and summer, and Isaac Sowells will also be entering his third NFL season after having spent the previous two as a backup guard.

McKinney (6-foot-3, 315) has started 42 of 69 career games. He was third-round pick of the Dolphins in 2002 and spent his first five NFL seasons in Miami.

We've got too many guys to play guard/ center and too few to play tackle.
LCB hasn't been working out here so our staff can evaluate his progress, so I think he's hiding some major damage that the staff was trying to get him to take that other surgery to fix that he passed on.
I don't think he'll ever play here again, and may never play as a starter anywhere else.
LCB and Baxter are both in positions to cut outright and not really hurt us if they're "unfit" to play.

I dont think the nail comes until the guy shows up in camp and shows that he can't play, that is IF he can't play. We have a ton of O-lineman now and this competition is going to be nuts in camp.

I'm now 100% sure that we'll be drafting a tackle somewhere near the end of the draft.

Tucker is already going to be the first backup for RT. If Thomas goes down Schaffer moves to LT and Tucker goes into RT...so that is set.

As for the abundance of G/C. You have to remember you are backing up 3 positions. So having McKinney/Hadnot/Sowells/Bentley/Fraley/Steinbach to cover 3 spots isn't that bad...3 starters and 3 backups. No problem.
I don't see any writing on the wall other than "The Browns have OL Depth!!!"

Plus moving Tucker to TE in certain running situations, adding an extra blocker, then we're using 6 or the possible 7 starters

I have to disagree with you there. Too many starters for OL depth. I see writing on that wall and it says "Draft Day Trade!"

It could also say "Cut & Dump!"

While you may have a valid point there, I have to wonder if we can elude the injury bug through spring training to be in a postion to be able to make a trade before the season starts. I would be somewhat surprised to see Phil take a chance like that in the draft unless someone he really likes drops into his lap and basically is too good to pass up. I just don't see that happening, but stranger things have happened.

The word is still out on LCB. If he comes and lights it up in camp, this thread is useless. The man has heart. Lets see if he has the leg. Nobody knows jackshit what he can or cannot do, so all speculation is useless.

I think Savage knows something.

So if he was counting Bentley in the seven, who do you think is the odd man out??

That is one way to look at it. Another is you can never have enough quality competition at OL, and then they can always trade. Sure, they may not be counting LCB there. Fact is they're not sure how he is doing. I don't think LCB is capable of hiding anything in the long run - it will all come out in camp.

He's not counting Bentley. Its basically the fact that Thomas, Steinbach, Fraley, Tucker, Shaffer, McKinney and Hadnot were all starters last year at some point in the season. LeCharles never started or played. Thats basically that. All this Bentley's gone and nail in coffin stuff doesnt mean anything until camp. Thats where you find out who can play and who can not.
