Time for Aaron Rogers. Now we can see what 3 yrs on the bench does for a QB.

Adam, I appreciate your insight.

I do think Rodgers got a bit stale sitting on the bench for so long though. He'll definitely be a step down from Favre in his first year starting.

Aaron Rodgers is gonna be terrific. Smart (38 on Wonderlic), athletic (4.7), and a quicker release than Bulger, meaning the best in the NFL.

He looked REALLY good in that game last year. I'm happy the kid is getting his shot. Finally.

I think he will be good too. He's undersized just like Favre but I dont think that matters nearly as much as people make it out to. I'm going to try to get him as my backup in fantasy.

I don't know of anyone who would assert that 3 years of "bench-wood" aging is optimal for an NFL QB. Is it unprecendented? No. Is it considered the optimal approach? No.

Rogers found himself in a unique situation: sitting behind a HoFer.

I think he's gonna be good too. But he's not strong with the deep ball. His game is short, controlled passes.

Rodgers arm strength is actually very good -- he spins it really fast and can make all the throws.

But I don't totally disagree with Lum -- he prefers throwing fast balls to going over the top. But he plays in a WCO, so that's the norm.

He threw a great deep ball in that Dallas game, though.

He completed 23 straight against USC. The kid can really get in the groove.

FAVRE SITUATION SUDDENLY GETS WEIRD

As it turns out, that dark cloud in Wisconsin could quickly become a storm.

Brett Favre's agent, Bus Cook, has told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that Favre wanted to play another year, but that he felt like the Packers didn't want him.

Uh-oh.

"I know he wants to play one more year," Cook said. "I do not know much conversation there was and I don't think anyone forced him to make that decision. But I don't know that anyone tried to talk him out of it."

Uh-oh.

"I think he wanted to play," Cook said. " I think he's still got it. He knows he's still got it. I think he felt he could play one more year. I don't know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That's just the feeling I got."

Uh-oh.

Asked whether Favre could be talked into returning, Cook said, "I don't know."

Well, maybe the media speculation that the guy who brought Favre to Green Bay, former G.M. Ron Wolf, might be whispering to Bill Parcells about trying to get Favre to Miami is more accurate than we initially thought. Because if Favre wants to play another year and if it's not with the Packers, then maybe it will be elsewhere.

But if Favre doesn't play for the Packers in 2008, either because he's playing for someone else or not playing at all, we think that there could be an enormous backlash against the team. Specifically, G.M. Ted Thompson could find himself in the crosshairs of the fans' criticism.

Never mind the fact that Thompson has done an excellent job; the perception that he ran off Brett Favre could be the quickest ticket out of town for Thompson.

If, in the end, Thompson gets saddled with the brunt of the blame for Favre's departure, the pressure on Thompson to leave, too, will be tremendous. And, as a practical matter, it will put him on an incredibly short leash if the team falters in 2008.

Okay... This is where I jump in (again)...

Favre won't jump ship to Miami. There was a recent article that talked about him feeling his age and realizing that he cannot do this forever. There is no reason for him to jump from Green Bay if he wanted to play again. They would give him the money and incentive he would want to stay there and play, even if they aren't encouraging him. He would hurt his legacy by jumping to another team and he won't do that. There's no need for him to do it. Also, he has plenty of business dealings and offers back in Mississippi, as well as in Wisconsin to keep him busy in retirement.

I called my Mom (who's in the heart of Packers territory) to break the news to her. I'm starting the campaign to move DA to Green Bay so I can watch Quinn start. Hubby doesn't know this yet... Thankfully, he wasn't around when I read the news that Favre is retiring.

SKEPTICISM SWIRLS ABOUT FAVRE RETIREMENT

Several league insiders with whom we've communicated regarding the stunning decision of quarterback Brett Favre to retire from the Packers aren't convinced that Brett's days in green and gold are over.

"I believe you should be skeptical about this," one league source expressed to us a little while ago.

We're not officially skeptical yet, but the comments of agent Bus Cook make us think that, once Favre appreciates the outpouring of affection and support from Cheeseheads everywhere, he could change his mind.

And to the extent that there's an impression on Brett's part that the organization didn't want him, we suspect that a behind-the-scenes butt-smooching session of epic proportions already is unfolding.
