That really sucks...but it does give some of our young guys an opportunity to step up and make the squad. It also may mean a fresh JJ for the stretch run to the playoffs.

Keeping my fingers crossed this is NOT the end of JJ's career.

Look...if it's Eric Parker (on the cheap) or Travis Wilson as our 3, I'll take Parker.

Eric Parker is a small, speed guy (6'0" 180), on the lines of Stallworth (6'0" 200).

Our advantage last year was putting 3 guys that were 6'4" or taller out in routes every play. We bring in Parker and we are down to K2 and BE as big guys, and 2 little guys.

Wilson isn't much taller, but is BIG (6'1" 215) and Hubbard is pretty big as well (6'3" 221)...and both are pretty fast. Their size will allow them to absorb the hits over the middle and not break down.

Add into that the fact Parker will need to learn the system, while these guys have been in it for at least the entire off-season (or 3yrs in the case of Wilson)...and the fact that BOTH were getting rave reviews in OTA's and mini-camp...and I am leaning towards NOT going out and getting anyone new.

Besides, we are talking possibly as few as 6 weeks. Why bring in a guy as a rental when we very well could have JJ's future replacement (next year) already on the squad and ready to start getting game time experience? Wilson was a third round pick...I say it is time for him to stand up and take the ball or let Hubbard take it.

Don't forget Rucker (6'5" 248) is a TE who basically played the WR position, and is very fast...he would be a great person to assume some of the slot duties.

I'm not a doctor, but I suspect JJ's done. And I am NOT ready to count on Travis Wilson. If Parker doesn't cost too much, I don't see a downside to bringing in a guy who can actually catch the ball.

Keep in mind that Eric Parker had surgery on his toe last October and didn't play a single down last year. He also has not participated in minicamp or OTA's ...just running and some drills.

He SHOULD be healthy and ready to go, but...

Also keep in mind he is already 29 years old, and has NEVER had more than 13 starts and has only had over 50 catches once in his career...and a TD high of 4 (4yrs ago...never saw the endzone in 2006).

I am not sure why everyone is enamored with a little (6' 180), 29 yr old guy who is injury prone, missed the previous year, and hasn't seen the endzone since 2005.

What about Cribbs at #3...... am i the only one that really likes the kid as a starting WR? As we saw last year he makes things happen and is not scared to catch those nasty DA passes through the Middle! he is the opposite of Northsuck!

Parker is a more typical slot receiver than JJ, actually. So is Kevin Kasper.

I think the Browns really like Paul Hubbard -- as someone recently wrote, he certainly LOOKS like a #1 receiver when you see his size, speed, and leaping ability. That might be what keeps the team from adding someone. Even now, it's tough to imagine Kasper, Hubbard, and Wilson all making the team with Cribbs taking up a receiver spot (even though he barely plays it).

If the Browns like Kasper, they may pass on Parker.

A little more on Parker:

quote:
Coming out of college, Parker was labeled as injury-prone and thus was passed over in the draft. He was originally invited to the Houston Texans training camp as an undrafted free agent, but was released by the Texans[1] and considered a life without football. Shortly after this, the Chargers invited him to their camp. He spent some time on the practice squad and eventually made the team in late 2002.

Parker had a productive campaign in 2003 before a shoulder injury cut his season short. His best season was in 2005 when he caught 57 passes for 725 yards. During the 2006 offseason, the Chargers signed Parker to a new five year deal.

Parker does not typically post big numbers, but many of his catches are for key first downs and he is praised by his teammates for his route-running abilities. He is often referred to by fans as "Mr. Clutch." Parker also handles punt return duties for the Chargers.

In 2006, Parker and then #1 wide receiver Keenan McCardell both ended the season with zero touchdown catches. It was one of the few times in the history of the NFL that a starting WR duo had no touchdowns. Teammates LaDainian Tomlinson, tight end Antonio Gates and wide receiver Vincent Jackson accounted for the majority of the Chargers' scores.

Eric's 2006 season came to a disappointing end in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. In a game the Chargers lost to the New England Patriots by three points, Parker dropped two passes and fumbled a crucial third-quarter punt, which led to 3 points for the opposing team.

In 2007, Eric Parker injured his toe during training camp. This led to the Chargers Putting him on injured reserve, and him missing the entire 2007 season.

Like I said, injury prone and not exactly an endzone threat.

I think any cap room is going to be spent getting a second tier CB to back up our guys (I don't see Law/Sheppard/etc...).

I think the Browns will be looking at using Hubbard/Rucker/Wilson as a group unless one of them steps up big. We will probably be seeing a lot of 2 TE sets with either Rucker or K2 running WR type routes to get mismatches against LB's or S's.

Firt of all. Counting Eric Parker is dumb. He is not on the roster. He is not a free agent. We are not going to mortgage future picks on a 3rd down back when we have guys bigger, stronger and faster already on the team.

We have a 3rd round pick invested in Wilson already and going on 3 years of paycheckswho is said to have now learned the playbook. This is WHAT was holding him back the past 2 years. He has been getting raves all offseason and has loads of talent.

Kasper is ready to go and bigger and faster than Parker.

We have cribbs who is explosive with the ball and 2-3 other guys, even after Wilson, Kasper, and Cribbs.

Paul Hubbard, Steve Sanders (who I believe is ready to contribute),Ephrem Hill, lance legget, and Steptoe. All these other guys are over 6' tall (but Steptoe).

WE DO NOT NEED PARKER.. We certainly do not need to give a draft pick for him.. If we want a veteran..there will be other guys who will be available at the end of august in cutdowns. Parker may be one of them. The sky is not falling because of Joe J.

We could run double tight ends in a 2 reciever set if needed and still have mismatches all over the field!!

Come on guys get real. Joe is a good guy but he was old and slow even before the surgery.A great 3rd guy but he is not a threat to take it to the house like these young guys. They ARE pro wide recievers by the way.. They CAn catch the ball and experience can be gained. Speed cannot be taught to an old man. Sorry but these are the hard cold truths.

You're right, we don't need him. But you will have a hard time convincing me that adding him with a 6th or 7th round pick doesn't help the team.

that said, I wouldn't be mad if we didnt pursue anyone. Just saying, this was discussed weeks ago and it makes sense given the circumstances..

Injury concerns are fair points - outside of that you are over-analyzing.

NIM: Sorry but I disagree. We need picks going forward.. I do not see parker being better than what we already have. He is 6' 180 and already 29 years old.. If he was going to be a star..he would have been by now... youth is the way to go. even as a starter his numbers sucked. 4 td's was the best he could in any season even as a full time starter.. I don't like him. What we have is already better across the board.

We don't need a star, SEZ. We need a guy who can step in until one of our younger guys steps up.

Between 2004 and 2006, Parker had three years like JJ had last year -- between 650 and 750 yards and a reputation as a good route runner who makes clutch catches.

He's in his prime at 29, 5 years younger than JJ, and he knows Chud's offense.

I'm not saying we'll make the move... but those are the reasons it's being discussed.

Is he better than Kevin Kasper? Well, he's certainly done way more AND he's a year younger. I can't imagine anybody choosing Kasper over Parker.

Again, though... after Winslow, Edwards, and Stallworth get their catches... what's left?

After Winslow, Edwards, and J.J., who had a big year for the Browns last year? How many catches were left?

I think the one thing people have forgotten is that when you take out last season, the Browns have had some of the worst injury history in the entire NFL. So depth is a concern. I'm sorry, but I don't want to have to envision a day where Kevin Kasper is starting.

The Browns traded next year's fifth to get Hubbard now. I just can't imagine them cutting him.

Both Wilson and Kasper got a lot of nice lip service from the coaches.

Could well be that the team figures a way to keep all three. If Parker comes in, Kasper goes out.

I don't care if we bring f-ing Reggie Langhorne back, I DO NOT want to rely on Travis Wilson as my #3, and, heaven forbid, something more important. The guy has been nothing but an unmitigated bust, plain and simple. Sorry, but if you can't catch OR learn the playbook, you are pretty useless, no matter how much game you talk.

And as good as Hubbard "looked" at OTAs, there is no way he's ready to step in and play a decent role. And Kasper is a retread.
