Jeez, Tim, it was a joke. You know, based on the Paris and Britney ad, with the headline, "But... is he ready to lead?"

C'mon, man. Lighten up a little.

I'm not sure, but I'm inclined to say yes.

Fox News and conservative bloggers pushed and pushed the Bill Ayers story until the rest of the media picked it up.

And Drudge has been known to feed the media its stories. If he put up a picture of Michelle Obama with the caption "Buffalo Chip girl?" hundreds of journalists would have started talking about it.

At the very least, Obama would have had to explain himself. And whenever a politician is forced to explain why he said his wife should be simulating sex acts, that's not a good thing. Just ask the guy who was supposed to run against Obama in his '04 Senate race, Jack Ryan.

I think a Foxnews producer also unearthed Wright's sermons. Bought 5 random DVD's and got those soundbytes.

Yeah, the people at Fox News know what they're doing.

I've been working off the assumption that McCain offered Cindy to the gods of Miss Buffalo Chip out of ignorance of what the competition's all about.

Megan Carpentier disagrees. She makes some interesting points:
quote:
And, let's be frank, he didn't do it just because she's pretty or has an enviable body for a 54-year-old woman or because he's proud of his wife's brand of socialite beauty. He did it to pander to the crowd's idea of appropriate masculinity, and that apparently includes over-sexualizing your wife and the mother of your children for the amusement of a few people in a crowd. McCain offered up the thought of his wife objectifying herself for the sexual gratification of others (at his suggestion) in order to get a couple of chuckles, inspire some male fantasy and make a few "friends." Fun!

And you might say that John McCain didn't think of it as an objectification ritual, or that he didn't know that it involved nudity and displays of stimulated sex acts or whatever. Well, then, why wasn't he offering to get his very pretty daughter Meghan up on stage? Suggesting a 24-year-old woman participate in a just-a-beauty pageant wouldn't be so outside the the norm, if he thought it would be just a beauty pageant. But he knew that it wasn't, and he doesn't think of his daughter in that way and wouldn't in a million years as a father suggest or even intimate that his daughter should get on stage and flash her breasts, ass and (potentially) her external genitalia at a group of strange men for admiration, money or votes.
A little strong, but the "why not Meghan" argument's pretty interesting.

Also, if you watch the video, it's clear that he's reading the speech straight off of a music stand right in front of him. Either McCain's speechwriters have never used a search engine before, or they knew perfectly well what they were having the candidate say. Before putting that in the speech, wouldn't they run it by the candidate?

And if you're a social conservative, doesn't this kind of stuff bother you?

Well, at least he didn't go all Dan Quayle.

I'm all for a President that's down with some T&A (and E - because otherwise it's only phonetically correct.)

Unfortunately for McCain, clips of this engagement have trickled out. He may be the worst speaker among presidential candidates in forever. I mean, anything above the small, folksy town hall meeting and the guy can't say a single freaking sentence.

It took him a week to ask the bikers wantonly revving their engines if they liked paying four bucks a gallon to burn fossil fuel driving nowhere.

Then he told them that the sound of their engines was the sound of freedom. As opposed to the sound of environmental stupidity.

It was a laughable little gathering filled with gaffes.

Without a teleprompter Obammy is a lot worse.
That's why he chickens out without canned soundbytes.

He has his soft spots, but nowhere near McCain.

Obama shows fatigue and trances. McCain makes nonsense sounds or rubs his head, which is actually kinda cute.

But that's life on today's incredibly frenetic campaign trail. I give McCain credit for holding up at 72. No kidding.

Remember that there's no teleprompter for ANY kind of debate.
