Rep. Barney Frank just announced that he's going to introduce a bill to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. He's calling it the "Make room for real criminals" act.

Do you think this is a good idea or not?

We're headed that way step by step anyway, and it's really just recognizing the reality of how our society and most around the world view pot: In the category of wine and beer, not Cocaine and sure as hell not Meth or Heroin.

Many states give a slap on the wrist or the equivalent of a parking ticket for possession of pot. Honestly, rightfully so. It isn't deadly or poisonous. It doesn't cause rage or violence. It's difficult (impossible) to view it as more damaging to the populace than alcohol.

Truth is, the concept of "beating drugs" is a little odd. Humans have been into altering our minds in one way or another since we climbed out of the ooze. It's part of our global culture since the dawn of time. It's who we are. It's what we do. It will not change. Ever.

What is or isn't legal is based on a shifting set of criteria, but it's tough to legalize alcohol and cigarettes and not pot. It's stood the test of time as far as being relatively innocuous.

I don't have a problem with it. We waste a lot of money and do nothing but dirve the price up. Plus it is no more harmful then Alcohol or Tabbaco.

That's three.

As Frank said, "It’s one area where the public is ahead of the elected officials."

Anyone else?

Great idea.........follow that with other drugs and prostitution and we are on the way to be civilized............and the number of shooting deaths of clerks at convenience stores would drop dramatically

I always wondered if they incarcerated the horses that ate the loco weed and went goofy in those old cowboy movies.......way back

I don't think people rob convenience stores in order to fund their pot habit, but that's okay. That's four.

Anyone else care to weigh in?

I had to pause & laugh at how great a divide between my feelings on the drug 6-7 years ago is from my feelings today.

At any rate, I still think it should be legal, taxed & save tons of taxes fighting it.

But, enjoying the repeal of the law is just not my thing anymore.

How do you know that......and you chopped half my answer off because when the monkey is on one's back in the cocaine habit they indeed rob a lot of places to fund it............and I am sure todays prices of marijuana cause some robberies as well

Make it five. There are a number of excellent reasons for supporting legalization: Drew Carey does an excellent job of defending medical marijuana as just another drug that people should have access to.

If you need a shut-down argument for legalized pot? Williw Nelson is still going strong, and he just gets cooler and cooler every year. Johnny Cash went straight, and look how that turned out.

Not Sure, I just went to court supporting a good friend on a dui (first timer) and while sitting and waiting I got to witness several people charged with posession and even a heroin dealer (merchant of death) they all walked.
these drug dealers and users were all smiling and laughing as they walked out Free!
My friend got his ass reamed out for a first offense lost his license for 1 year community service, mandatory alcohol classes plus fines up the ass. This will haunt him for years. know, he is a Political Correctness Prisoner. While these Fooking Pedalers of Death are walking around with no remorse.
It completley Pissed me Off!
In Wilmington NC alone the first two months of this year we have had 8 deaths from heroin. and we haven't had one person killed by a drunk driver. My guess is these Drug Fookers get to walk because there isn't any money to be made for the local and state Government. The Law Makers have realized that hard working tax paying americans work and earn money, and these PotHead MotherFookers dont so they dont do anything to them when they are caught.

Barney Franks is a Fookin Faggot!

I was wondering how long it'd take someone to mention that.

Ever so delicately.

And Rich, people don't get addicted to marijuana, so I can't imagine it'd make you crazy enough to rob a liquor store to fund a habit that you don't have.

Nor is it all that expensive anyway.

I've heard of people robbing stores for money to buy meth, coke, percoset, heroin, Oxycontin, etc., but I don't think people on pot rob convenience stores to get money.

They go to convenience stores to buy a bag of Funyuns and a microwave burrito.

For the most part I agree about Marijuana. I am not stopping there as I indicated I specifically aaid cocaine should be legalized as well.

How do you know Marijuana is not addicitve??? And alcohol is and so are cigarettes I guess that means they should be illegal.

the whole subject is a can of worms........make it all legal and watch the crime rate drop like a rock

How do I know that it's not addictive? Because they do tests on this stuff. And it's not physically addictive.

Unlike alcohol and cigarettes.

Also, Frank's bill wouldn't legalize marijuana. It'd decriminalize it.

Doesn't solve the problem then.......if it were legal the price would drop dramatically and associated crime would cease.

As far as addictive.........is it mentally addictive

My thoughts.
I don't smoke pot.
I don't enjoy the buzz; that's all.

I know guys that do (hey ya can't be a musician and be unaware )
Many of them you don't know if they've had a recent hit or not. Some who seem obsessed giggling and sneaking out of rehearsal and ****ing up parts.
Not dissimilar to boozers in general.

First unless someone else's substance use is inconveniencing me who cares?
Second I'm stunned that an MD can't prescribe whatever he thinks will help.
Third I think "crime" is kind of a red herring. Thugs rob people for drugs sure. Also Sneakers clothing gas and rap CDs.
Fourth I don't think the small possesion crimes are filling up the prisons.
Fifth when there is less criminality (as it should be) the courts the lawyers the cops the drug treatment centers and the dope dealers will need to find a way to replace the revenue source.
Just a thought.

But fine with me Barney.
Shep hit it right on the head.

It seems we finally found something to unite us. Not the country. Or the war. Or Barack Obama.

Pot decriminalization.

I think the moonshiner's in Appalachia would disagree. Both with the pot & the booze crimes.

"I ain't payin' no tax on my booze" would translate into
"I ain't payin' no tax on my pot either."
