[Bush] had never met anyone like Rice. She could talk baseball, football, and foreign policy all at the same time, but she did not sound like an intellectual and she never made him feel inadequate or ignorant. On the contrary, Rice made Bush feel sharper, particularly when she complimented him on his questions. Bush did not know many black people well, and it made him feel good about himself that he got along so easily with Rice. It was hard not to see that she was also attractive, athletic, and competitive, and, like him, underestimated for much of her adult life.

Maybe if Bush hadn't chosen his advisers based on whether they made him feel good, he wouldn't have assembled a team that led us into a foreign policy clusterf*ck.

That's part of the reason why you want a president with a strong base of foreign & domestic policy knowledge, not just random impulses.

As I've said, I like Condoleeza Rice. She's intelligent, tough, and working in an untenable situation. That said, picking someone for a high position based on the fact that she like football and doesn't make you feel stupid borders on the retarded. See: Harriet "You should know that your dad is so cool" Miers.

"Underestimated?" Like Bush? Let's see...speaks five languages, Russia specialist for the NSA in her mid-30s, Provost of Stanford, high-level positions at various institutions and companies well before joining the Bush administration...and she's "underestimated" just like the guy whose primary achievement before 2000 was trading Sammy Sosa. Who wrote that passage, Bush himself?

Shep :

I'm voting for Steve. Or Robert Byrd. He could really kick ass on Heck, too.

Uh, so you wouldn't vote for Byrd?

C'mon boys.
Be honest.

And believe me, I'm not arguing this point with you because it's you, and that I really do agree with you and I just can't take it, or something. I'm arguing it because it's ridiculous, which makes me want to stop wasting my time.

Well then I'll just say I don't buy that.
I say it's because A. you love to bicker and B you have a double standard when it comes to the people you like and the ones you don't.

And for all your bellyaching about the tactic you respond most (or at least half) of the time with ad hominem attacks.

Anyway yours more fun than "put down the pipe" for the 1000th time.
Thumbs up

Steve, I really don't write things on here that I don't believe. You've really got to get over yourself.

The idea that it doesn't matter if we make Ted Nugent or John McCain, or Shep or Barack Obama president, is one of the dumber points you've ever tried to make.

I doubt you could find another person in here who believes that. Yet somehow you think it's a revolutionary idea and I simply can't bear to admit how genius it is.

I don't mind debating. Debating over something like this, however, is not exactly time well spent.

Nice matrix. Here's Larry Wilkerson, Colin Powell's Chief of Staff, discussing Douglas Feith. Good stuff.

As for the dissenters, my disdain for McClellan is known. Joe Wilson is sharp, but well-nigh insufferable. Clarke would be as well, but he's too smart to ignore. I've always liked Christie Whitman, and I'm glad she got out early. If I understood economics better, I would probably get more out of O'Neill as well. Powell will never write a tell-all; he'll take his stuff to the grave.

As for Feith, well, my mom always said it wasn't nice to make fun of retarded people, so I'll just say I'm sure he tries.

He was the only administration official who had to go to press conferences with the talking points safety-pinned to his lapel.

Whitman probably will be remembered for two things:

1. This photo:

2. This statement (on September 18, 2001):
quote:
"Given the scope of the tragedy from last week, I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington, DC that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink."

So she didn't salvage much of a political reputation by ditching Bush early on.
