Hall of Famer |
I've defended CNN for a long time. I enjoyed Crossfire, even though I often wished for some sort of gas explosion or electrical fire to take out both Carville and Novak in one fell swoop. I like Tucker Carlson, and I've learned to ignore Nancy Grace until her demon spawn children devour her at the start of the apocalypse. Larry King I can take or leave.
I've never fully accepted Jon Stewart's (and others') criticism that they run too much "non-news." They are a business, not a public trust--if you want news, watch Jim Lehrer like a grown-up. Plus Stewart was a tool to Carlson, which soured me on TDS for about six months. But now, CNN is selling t-shirts of their online headlines. I kid you not. The link also shows why you should never trust FAQ pages, either, because when you find out that CNN is selling t-shirts of their headlines, the only frequently asked question is: IS THIS SOME KIND OF F****** JOKE?!" Dennis Ted Turner must be rolling around in his grave. Edit: I do realize he's still alive. And, self-aggrandizing and, well, crazy as he is most of the time, I've always liked Ol' Ted. Anybody who thinks he can save the world by starting his own pseudo-Olympics, then buys a baseball team and tries to hire himself as manager can't be all bad. |

CNN's also got into the anger game with faux-populists like Lou Dobbs and Jack Cafferty.
I wouldn't be surprised if they hired someone to read Howard Beale's speeches on air...it would be their highest rated show. |

Numbers Retired and hangs in the rafters |
Good evening. Today is Wednesday, September the 24th, and this is my last broadcast. Yesterday I announced on this program that I was going to commit public suicide, admittedly an act of madness. Well, I'll tell you what happened: I just ran out of bullshit. Am I still on the air? I really don't know any other way to say it other than I just ran out of bullshit. Bullshit is all the reasons we give for living. And if we can't think up any reasons of our own, we always have the God bullshit. We don't know why we're going through all this pointless pain, humiliation, decays, so there better be someone somewhere who does know. That's the God bullshit. And then, there's the noble man bullshit; that man is a noble creature that can order his own world; who needs God? Well, if there's anybody out there that can look around this demented slaughterhouse of a world we live in and tell me that man is a noble creature, believe me: That man is full of bullshit. I don't have anything going for me. I haven't got any kids. And I was married for thirty-three years of shrill, shrieking fraud. So I don't have any bullshit left. I just ran out of it, you see.

Now there's some hope you can believe in Howard! WSS |

If there's one movie that's due for a remake, it's Network.
It'd be hard to find someone talented enough to match Peter Finch's Beale performance, but I think Angelina Jolie would be perfect in Faye Dunaway's role. Jolie's great at playing cold & emotionally stunted characters (think Girl, Interrupted). Maybe Tom Wilkinson could play Howard Beale; he was great as the psychotic lawyer in Michael Clayton. Sorry for going so off topic...maybe I should have posted this on WSS's board |

I like Wilkerson. Or Albert Finney.

Finney would have been my second choice. I thought he was great in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, and he's almost a carbon copy of Peter Finch.
Nicholson would be interesting, but I think he'd overdo the craziness element. I didn't like him in The Departed, though everyone else I know thought he was amazing in that role. |
