Obama is doing great in national polls, but he needs to win electoral votes, not the popular vote (right Al Gore?). In states like OH, WV, PA, MN, FL, and others this could be a problem:
"The West Virginia exit polls indicate that he lost white voters 69-28. In Ohio, Clinton won white voters 64-34. In Pennsylvania, Clinton won whites 63-37. Indiana? Whites went for Clinton 60-40. Massachusetts? Whites went for Clinton 58-40. Rhode Island? 63-31 for Clinton. North Carolina? 61-37. And the same in Arkansas, Tennessee, Maryland, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, Missouri and so on. Obama has won the white vote in Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Virginia, Colorado, Washington, Idaho, Utah, North Dakota, Nebraska, etc. West of the Mississippi all of them EXCEPT Wisconsin and VA. West Virginia is not an anomaly. Obama’s white working class problem is EAST of the Mississippi. It is not just Appalachia." If you were a superdelegate, would you be influenced by Hillary's argument that she has won more big states, states with more electoral votes, more battleground states, and more white voters (no, I cant believe she said it either)? |

According to the AP:
Barely a third of Clinton supporters say they'd vote for Obama over John McCain in a November matchup. As many claim they'd vote for Republican John McCain and a quarter said they would not vote for president. If that horse race were Clinton vs. McCain, half of Obama backers say they'd vote for Clinton, about three in 10 say they'd back McCain and the rest would stay home. |

From NYT:
Interviews with West Virginians leaving the polls showed some profound weaknesses that could haunt the Illinois senator in the fall. More than half said they would be dissatisfied if Obama was the nominee. Half believe he shares the views of the Rev. Wright, and more than half said he does not share their values. More than half also said that he is not honest and trustworthy. Just under half of the Clinton voters said they would not support Obama in the fall. |

Remember, this is coming from people who just got done voting for Hillary Clinton. This IS something that should concern Obama and his supporters--Clinton has been running what looks a lot like a scorched-earth campaign for the past couple of months, and it has to have some effect. If I were horribly cynical and distrustful (noooo...), I would suggest that maybe, just possibly, there are two thoughts in Hillary's mind: poison the well with my supporters so much that he has no choice but to offer me the VP slot, or, better yet, loses the general election so that I can ru in 2008.
