Evidently Obama's travel plans involve flying into South Bend,IN 6:30 PM Tuesday and not leaving until 3:25 PM Wednesday.

Why spend so much time in Indiana?

Early this week would be the last chance he'd have before the convention to get his veep selection into the news cycle without competing with the Olympics.

And he's chilling in northern Indiana for almost 24 hours?

Here's one of the local stories on the trip:

http://www.wndu.com/home/headlines/26257839.html

It just seems a bit odd to me for him to stay there overnight and for almost 24 hours to attempt to sway voters in ONE COUNTY of a state that the Democratic Party hasn't won since Moses was on the ballot.

Bayh seems to be okay. If Obama selects a man for his running mate... (I hope he does)...

I hope McCain picks the cute gov of Alaska for his.

Considering how much of Obama's campaign is premised on his October 2002 opposition to invading Iraq, it'd be hard for some of his supporters to stomach him choosing Bayh, a former chairmen of the neocon Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, as his VP.

Well he would just spin it into something about "uniter," "promise," "hope for change," or something of the sort.

Why so dark, Tim? Looking for someone people don't get so excited about?

"McCain: He Doesn't Think He's Mister Special... Because He's Not."

Zzzzzzz...

No shep, it wasn't meant to be dark. IF he were to pick Bayh, he would be faced with some of the questions Al alluded to. And he would (rightly so) spin it to his advantage. It's pretty simple really...and not dark - just realistic.

It'd be a very smart political pick: a popular senator (& former governor) who was a big Clinton supporter. Bayh's also a good-looking guy with two little kids about the same age as Obama's, so it'd provide plenty of excellent photo ops.

But Bayh doesn't stand out as a leader on any issues, save for his hawkish stance on Iraq.

Though I'd be glad if Bayh ended up helping him win Indiana, I'd lose a tiny bit of respect for Obama if he picked him as his VP.

Whatever wins, honestly, because the VP is an election tool unless you're really old.

Bayh has been in the small circle for a while now... and I don't really fully understand why. I get that he's popular and videogenic and Midwestern and the whole kids thing...

Not sure if there's some kind of connection between the two guys.

The other thing with Bayh is that he's a "safe" pick that doesn't bring any major baggage or skeletons.

He is also a pick that would comfort some of the more moderate voters.

And like I said before, time's running out if he wants to make a pre-convention selection that will get a good run in the news before the Olympics start....and he's spending almost 24 hours of that time in Northern Indiana?

Who knows...maybe he's just going to wait until the convention, but this campaign stop just seems awfully odd to me.

Indiana, Illinois, share a border???

It's obvious Obama feels the election will be won in the mid-west.

He has to turn white America, or, more on point, take votes away from McCain.

I think he feels McCain will get the west as a whole, and south, he will get the east, and the fight will be in the corn belt, so he wants to shore that up.

For him, the running mate is more than a tool....the election for him hinges on the correct selection.

It will be interesting to see who McCain finally settles on...that will tip his hand on where his team feels the election will be won or lost. Probably a woman or another corn eater.....unless he is bold and goes with Liberman to steal the Jew vote which will narrow any advantage Obama feels he holds in NY and Florida's east coast.

In a normal election, that would be suicide, but in this election, McCain is going to get a certain amount of votes no matter who he chooses just as Obama is going to get all* the black vote.

* All meaning pretty much all...there might be 2000 blacks nation wide who will vote for him.

This campaign will boil down to which staff makes the right calls up to the election.

Not happening. Obama's got a 60% approval rating among Jewish voters, whereas Lieberman's got a 37% approval rating. And one poll said that putting Lieberman on the ticket would actually hurt McCain in Connecticut.

Lieberman wouldn't flip New York and McCain's expected to win Florida anyway, so I don't think he's an option.

Well, except for that little State of California. Or Oregon. Or Washington (!).

Well, except for the entire Pacific Coast, actually.

Definitively -- No Announcement on Obama's VP Wednesday

I have heard from a definitive, first tier source tonight.

Barack Obama's VP selection process has not played itself out. There will be no announcement that Evan Bayh is his running mate tomorrow when the Democratic presidential candidate appears in Indiana.

Certain candidates that would have been notified that they were it -- or not -- have not heard a thing.

So, a lot of head faking at play. There will be no announcement.

There was a blurb on CNN that Hillary's back in play to unite the party. But it was pure speculation.
